    scooter rental in jamaica

    Has anyone done this before?

    Pro's? Cons?

    What should I know?

Will a helmet be extra? Do people wear helmets at all?

Is there a high risk for an accident with steep consequences?

I'm going to Negril for spring break, and am considering scooter rental for one day so that I can do something else besides the clubs/bars/booze/beach.

I went to Montego Bay on my honeymoon.

They drive like crazy people. Also, they drive on the opposite side of the road as compared to the US, which gets confusing when you roll up on an intersection.

Just get very, very drunk. You'll be fine.

I agree with Chris. They do drive like crazed lunatics on the island. Be careful if you decide to rent a scooter.

But I also agree that lots of drinking will make you feel "Mo' Betta, Mon!"

Oh yeah, try some of the native herb too !!!!!! Just don't try and bring any home with you.

mo-bay is great but if you are going to be on the other side of the island than you will have a better time on the scooters...

FWIW stay out of the small villages and stay as close to the resorts/main routes as possible, I "lost" a scooter once down there and it was not fun or cheap finding out where it went...

    pay attention to this!!
they will rob you blind + leave you for dead in many areas!
stay near resorts + with people--NEVER pay what they ask for anything! Barder with em!

buy some ganja, kick back, + relax----mon!

p.s.-- if you have some old shit you don't need, like a boombox radio, bring it with you! They love to trade for stuff like that--the locals are very poor + there isn't much work there, except at the resorts, so outside the resorts they are very happy to trade + sometimes you can meet someone like that who can show you around the island for a few bucks!

stay away from the capital--it's pretty rough there!

When i went down there, I was warned not to partake in any of their weed, as the po-po love to lock you up for smoking it and extort money from you to get out.

Dammit. I figured as much, but wife yelled at me when she caught me checking out one of the canoe-sales guy's garbage bag full of weed.

I rented one for me and my girl on an island off cancun and it was fun. A lot of nuts on the road (especially taxis).

BUT places like that be careful. Thats one thing I would hate is to get hurt in a foreign country.

I've been to most of the Islands down there and lived on St. Crox and St. Thomas. The advice I can give you is Be Careful be Very Careful.

The Islanders think we are all RICH. DO NOT FLASH YOUR MONEY.Keep your money in seperate spots some in your pocket some in your socks ect.If you do get jacked they won't take it all.

Talk to your Hotel Manager for advice as to how to get around the Island, what specials they have, restuarants, diving tours, ect.

They usally have reputable taxi's they do business with. They should also have a taxi price guide to show you how much to go from A to B, B to A. Go in GROUPS. Stay close to the resorts at night. Don't forget to Tip, a couple of bucks goes a long way down there.

If you do rent a bike or a car. While driving aroud if you see you have a car in front of you and a car in back of you take NOTICE and leave space between you and them. If you come up to a stop leave plenty of room in case the car in front starts to back up to lock you in move quickly, don't think GO. Its a car jacking trick they have down there

The Police are there to Protect the Locals NOT YOU. Do Not get caught smoking the local
weed. Even though the penalty is most likely a Fine for a joint or two. Spending time in the Jail is VERY UNHEALTHY for a tourist .

So with that have fun, enjoy yourself and BE CAREFUL.

Hmm...after hearing the risk, I'm unsure about doing it.

I'll just head down and decide after a couple days.

How safe or unsafe is it to ride specifically, in Negril?

    Thanks for the responses.

Not sure how relevent it is, but I rented a 125 in Puerto Rico this fall, it turned out to be OK but you really have to be on the ball. The helmets were practically useless due to being decrepid and cheaply made. I would suggest observing how the driving appears before making a decision. Also beware of the condition of the bike, mine had a very bad front brake.

    After getting there, I...

-had beer on the busride back
-had beer the next day starting at 11am until 3:30am

...and eventually forgot about the scooter rental

I did, however, scope out the scene and found out that you can rent scooters. The rate ranges from $25-40/day for a scooter, 125cc motorcycle, or 175cc dirtbike. You also have to leave a $150-$500 deposit either cash or on a credit card. Expect to haggle scooter rental down to $25 depending on the vendor.

In Negril, there are vendors every mile or so on the main road, so it's readily available.

As for the other drivers, they are more dangerous than the U.S. I've been to India, where driving is worse, so the traffic situation didn't bother me at all, but I'm sure it will turn most people away from the idea altogether.

    Here's what I primarily saw:

    Some Yamaha DT175 motard/dirtbikezzz...

And btw, nobody there wears safety gear beyond a rentable, shotty, half-face helmet.

If you really want to ride safe, you might have to bring your own gear
