SVO = WVO
Straight/Waste Vegetable Oil
That is one way to do it. You use your regular tank running petro diesel or bio to warm the engine and the fuel transfer lines. Then switch it over to the free shit that most resteraunts have to pay to get rid of and will happily give to you. Runs great, just filter it well and don't use stuff with lots of hydroginated (whatever is spelled like) fats which contain water.
Other way to do it is to take the SVO/WVO, convert it to Biodiesel and run it in any diesel car just like normal diesel fuel. Runs smoother, has less emissions (other than NO, has 4% more due to the methanol) and smells like french fries for exhaust
www.greasecar.com for a company that makes SVO kits.
I've seen them work and I already have enough knowledge due to recent job experience to automate the entire biodiesel refining process (minus the titration, that is still manual but easy).
I'd probably go bio at first. Once I got enough experience with it and it's $.60 a gallon overhead, I'd use that in the normal tank for warm up/shutdown and put in an SVO tank for rackin up the miles. FREE FUEL (essentially).
If they ever come out with a real diesel motorcycle I'd buy it. Not the KLR one, that isn't feasable for the investment required.
Diesels are 40% more efficient than gas engines with all other things equal. They will always be. The diesel fuel (I think sectanes? like octanes which are 8 count molecular string, just many more) has more potential energy than gasoline. More grunt per gallon!
