    Mass register of trailer?

So I am about to put a new Harbor Freight trailer on the
    road.

Do I need to register the thing with the Mass. Registry?
I gather it needs brake lights and turn signals yes?

Reg, yes. Inspection, no. You're burdened with ensuring it meets equipment requirements.

See insurance agent for RMV-1, as you'll need their endorsement on it.

so do trailers need to be insured too?

this info on the RMV website makes it seem like trailers need all the same paperwork and coverage as a car:

You’ll need a signed and completed RMV1 form from your insurance agent, proof of ownership* from the seller, and the applicable fees.

Along with the completed RMV1 application, you must submit one of the following documents:

A Certificate of Origin (new trailers only), or
The previous owner's title, if a titled trailer, or
A bill of sale, if a non-titled trailer

*An old registration or excise bill in the name of the seller may be used as proof of ownership or a Certificate of Title for the trailer may be used.

An acceptable Bill of Sale for a trailer must list the following information:

    Name and address of buyer,
    Name and address of seller,
    Date of purchase,
    Purchase price, and
Identification information (VIN, make, model, and year)

If the total gross weight of a trailer - the combined weight of the trailer and its cargo - is 3,000 lbs. or less, no title is required. If the total gross weight of a trailer is 3,001 lbs. or more, a title is required. The gross weight of a trailer is determined by the manufacturer and will appear on the trailer's Certificate of Origin and on the trailer itself.
also, Akira, did you get a certificate of origin with the harbor freight trailer?

yes, trailers need to be insured, too. I think it only costs me like 50 bucks a year, if that to add my harbor freight trailer to my existing car insurance.

either way, you still need an RMV1 form to register it & the only way to get it is to go to your insurance rep.

The trailer will come w/ all required paperwork. I think all I had was just an email print-out of the sale that I got from Harbor Freight, the RMV1 form & I was all set... there might have been a cert. of origin in there too that came w/ it.

    Re: Mass register of trailer?

As I understand it the trailer will be covered for damages in a crash as long as it stays connected to your vehicle, which is the insurance policy it will ride a long with. BUT, if is separates from the vehicle in a crash or is vandalized, stolen, etc it will have no coverage unless you add it on extra.
