The only things I've ever truly choked on were lifesavers. One time at sears with a hard one, and another time in my aunts car with a chewy one. First time my mom heimliched the shit outta me. Second time I don't really remember, but my aunt was there, and she's a lung doctor of some sort.

I think he's trying to say the hole's make it harder to choke. Really it just lets enough air through so your throat doesn't realize it's chocking while you die of oxygen deprivation.
