Its kinda splitting hairs, because he is obviously a lot closer to a Democrat than he is to be a Republican.
I would, however, say that wikipedia is mistaken in their description of him. He is an Independant because he wants to be; he has often butted heads with Democrats over certain issues (not recently, but in the past), and was a supporter of George, Sr. back when he was the mayor of Burlington.
