I checked the Users Guide to Godwins Law. (Also, Godwins Law for Dummies). They both agree that Goodwins Law cannot be invoked in the original post where the original post is an article or quote from someone and which was posted as the topic for discussion.

GODWINS LAW FOR DUMMIES - "...since an original source may be posited as a topic for discussion, should said post refer to Nazis, the Holocost, or Hitler, one may not invoke Goodwins Law. This would be a tautological arguement or use of redundant language that adds no information."
