I have also heard that you can play around with the actual suspension without adding links. Is this possible and if so, how easy and safe is it. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Well I guess since I was mentioned and I work here I might as well add my two cents.
John is right I am kind of small. Im 5'6 so I have an inch over you and I do ride an RC51. I actually ended up raising the rear of my bike to make it handle better. Im not sure what my seat height is but I can not get both feet on the ground at once. I have to get off my bike to push it.
Try not to lower you bike as it can affect the handling usually in a very bad way. I know its a bit uncomfortable at first by try one footing it. I always put my left foot down unless I have no other option just so I have the rear brake covered in case I need it to hold the bike in place.
Also where on the island do you ride? I grew up over in Falmouth and on my trips to MV there is no place to have a good time.
