    Exhaust/Welding Help

Ok, I am "attempting" to build an exhaust system for my Buell. The few on the market are very expensive, plus I like to tinker w/ things (I probably shouldn't). Here goes, anyone familiar w/ the 1125R knows that aside from the headers, the entire exhaust system is under the bike. Thought this is a great design, the factory pipe is both ugly and heavy. The stock exhaust has completely rusted in the front after a year of use and about 10,000 miles, which makes it even uglier. Now, I have my idea and have even purchased the muffler I want to modify. Problem is i'm using SS304 and have no way of welding. So I am looking for some help welding the pieces together. Thanks in advance.

    Nick

Hey nick I can weld 304 up for you no problem Depending on what size exhaust your using I might have some spare piping too, I have a shitload of 1.75" bends, and a few 2, and 2 1/4 I think.

    Re: Exhaust/Welding Help

Tim, I'm just thinking 2 headers into a collector and a 2.25" down pipe terminating at my muffler. Some mounting bracket work and connecting the 2.25" to the collector. I'm thinking of using the stock clamps at the header end and possibly a V-band at the muffler end. This way its easier to get on/off.

Nick, when/wherever you decide to start fabbing, I want to be there! I'd love to watch that process.

i wandered in here to suggestion Tim, but i see he's beaten me to the punch.

you should figure out a way to fab up a pimpin' tip, like the RC8s solo side exit.

yea V-bands are a bit pricey but totally awesome, its always nice to be able to remove and install things in 5 seconds. For 2.25 you'll probably have to pick up some bends if you haven't already I only have straight. As long as there is enough clearance that you can fit an exhaust with normal bends/merges it shouldn't be too hard.

    Re: Exhaust/Welding Help

I figured I would wait until the muffler gets here and mock up the mounting for that. Then we can see what kind of bends/lengths we need. Here is the exhaust system I want to look like, just no straight through muffler.

    Re: Exhaust/Welding Help

I would analyze stock pipe length and diameter pretty carefully. Chances are they spent a lot of time developing it. Guessing at that stuff could gut your motor. 2.25 seems pretty big, and would require a shorter overall length to maintain backpressure. It becomes a little like a 2 stroke expansion chamber when you start changing tapers and diameters etc.

    Re: Exhaust/Welding Help

The internal of the stock pipe is a maze of 2" perf. pipes and chambers. All the aftermarkets are straight thru, including the above which actually made on average 8hp to the tires more than the stocker. I'm going to use a stainless Gibson muffler b/c it will have more backpressure internally than the straight through. The first is the straight through turbo muffler from the "Drummer" and the second is the muffler I'm using. Im goin w/ a center in/dual out though

All right Paul, I just read my last reply and didn't want to come across as an asshole.... I am looking for any advice and was just commenting that internally the stock pipe is literally a MAZE of perf pipe. The biggest being 2" from what I can tell. At the front is a larger chamber right off the headers.

The second muffler looks like it would do about what the factory is as far as back pressure. My question from an asthetics point of view is, How large is the muffler you are going to use? It looks like a car muffler is it going to 'flow' with the style of the bike or look like a booger?

    Re: Exhaust/Welding Help

Its the smallest muffler that I could find w/ the design I was looking for. I'm going to shorten it a little right off the bat in order to make it even more compact. There really is no way to make it "pretty" but look at the whole bike, my 1125r isn't going to win any beauty contests. An RC8/1098/RSVR it is not....

Yeah, honestly? I think his exhaust is THE best option right now. I had a Drummer on my XB12SS and my god did I love that sound. I still remember the shit eating grin the first time I fired it up.

HAHA, yeah.... Im a moron and I basically gave it away. After my bike was totaled I really wanted none of the parts left. Though now I'm realizing that pipe would have probably fit under the 1125 too.
