Actually, many women who are prostitutes are forced into it by their pimps. They are addicts or alcoholics and come from abusive or otherwise highly disfunctional homes. Their journey into prostitution is often not voluntary and is generally more unpleasant than you can imagine. One might argue that all the above is true BECAUSE it's illegal and that legalizing and licensing prostitution might eliminate the horror that it is today.
I'm not smart enough to know the right answer but I am smart enough to know that the idea that prostitution is a victimless crime is naïve and fails to see it for what it is...abuse of women.
