The problem is you don't need to be dealing with any of it. It's his damaged bike that he has to sell now. You are obviously blinded by excitement with this purchase. Whether or not the cosmetics bother you is a moot point. Eventually you will need to sell this bike and will be the one to repair it and take the hit on the sale. If it was me I would get the price dropped (the $800 sounds reasonable) and then ride the bike as is since it’s your first bike. The brake lever needs some massaging and the screen you mentioned needs to be replaced. Bottom line is you agreed to paying $3k for a bike and this is no longer the same bike that you agreed to. If you are dying to part with $3k I have a bike in mint condition I would be willing to sell.
