    racing on take-offs???

Playing with the idea of checking out the trackday / racing scene next year (more so track days for now). I know that race take-offs can be used for trackdays, what about using them for actual race weekends? Just trying to get a rough budget for the bike and whatnot for next season.

They're take-offs for a reason. IMO, I wouldn't even run them for track days.

Ummm take offs from a fast guy could last you multiple race weekends at your speed chuck... for example doucette probably takes his tires off when they are only good for 17s and not 15s... theyre fine for you to run 27s on

    x 10,000

I was running 19's my 1st year... I bought 2 sets of take-offs for the year.

I now sell my take-offs, and I comfortably ride 15's and 16's on them, or run them on trackdays... but if they're a second slower than i can go, I'd rather sell them.

Interesting. I was under the impression that once they started slipping, it was done for really hard leans and driving out of corners. You learn something new every day.

I, personally, still wouldn't use them though.

There are various reasons for race take-offs. Regardless, you'll be fine unless you plan on running 14's right out of the gate.

My take-off rear from last weekend was good for a 1:20 at yesterday's track day.... and it has virtually no tread remaining on the left side.

Chuck, sure you don't wanna buy some of my take-offs?

Pete, I'd buy anything that comes off your SV.

    Re: racing on take-offs???

Dont be afraid to run take offs. You'll feel them as their performance starts to drop...i ran this Diablo SC front at pocono this spring for a day. it was a take off that sat on a shelf for a god knows how long. its date code was 2005. it performed great, at least i didnt get passed all session in TPM blue group...

this is somewhat true... but you wont know about pulling G's for another 7 or 8 seconds.

Ok, but I had my first tire let go over the weekend while doing my 27's and 28's and it looked better than some of the take-offs that I've seen. I couldn't seem to get any traction while driving out of left-handers, maybe because I don't carry the corner speed that the fast guys do and have to count on my tire to hold when I slow down and speed back up.

I definitely wouldn't put that tire back on my bike for a track day.

See how many laps I've done this season? Same set of tires. Actually they were on there for awhile last year too.
Take offs are great for trackdays, especially if you have a spare set of wheels so you don't have to run race compound on the street. It also will give you a chance to try different brands without spending $400+ per set on new ones

Sort of. Thing is when a new racer crashes, they themselves could have caused their crash but the first thing they will blame are the scrubs (or the person who sold them) rather than themselves.

Take offs are fine for many applications....even racing. I believe my first time in the teens was on scrubs. After that I stuck with new hoops.

    Pretty much.

My advice is to use freshly removed take offs and concentrate on your rider skills. Trust the takeoffs. They aren't bad at all.

    Re: racing on take-offs???

thats what i figured but figured id ask people before i started to budget for race take offs and then find out that im screwed mid year next year.

working on a good deal on a sv650 that's been race prepped... cheap and saves me from messing up my R6

I have found takeoffs to be fine in the 22's. Only time I had a problem with slipping was when the pressure was wrong.

As you continue to race, I'd encourage you to look at bad habits and suspension set-up for finding reasons for traction issues. No traction on drives on an sv is not super common, they're not necessarily power houses. Do you have a rear shock? That'd be the first thing I started looking at.

    Re: racing on take-offs???

I just did 4 track days on take offs that had over 1000 laps on them. Still on the bike now. The rear tire did chunk slightly, so I'm going to replace. Otherwise, I'd continue to use them. Tires these days just don't heat cycle out like they used to. Seems to be traction until there's no rubber left.

Yeah, running an Ohlins shock. It definitely needs to be freshened up. Not in the budget right now though.
