CBR 600 F4i - No Fuel Pump Prime

So my friend shipped me this bike, and it looks like it sat in his shed for a good 8 months without being touched prior to me getting it. He had bought a new battery for it, and hooked the battery up backwards . So after I corrected that, and replaced the fuse it blew, I try to start the bike. I drained the tank and put fresh gas in, and turn the key.

Everything works, lights, horn, the works but the fuel pump doesn't prime. Using a electrical sensor (the cheapo things that light up) the fuel pump is getting power. But it doesn't do anything. All the fuses are good, I checked the relays and they are good, I don't know what to do.

Anyone have any insight? Want to have a look? I'm thoroughly frustrated with it at this point.

Re: CBR 600 F4i - No Fuel Pump Prime

If the fuel pump isn't priming then I don't thing jump starting it will help

i know fuel pumps are semi easy to replace on the CBR and that there have been people who have had to replace them for issuse like you explain.

the only other thing I can think of is a mouse got up in there and chewed a wire, it's amaizing where I find mouse poop on my bike during my winter cleaning and stuff. those little fucks can squeeze anywhere.

could also be a rusty wire like the issue I had with my CBR too?

Battery is brand new and on a tender when I'm not tinkering with it. Everything else works, just the fuel pump isn't priming. How would I jump it?

No need to jump it. If you are worried about voltage take a multimeter to the battery before you hook up a car battery to it.

It is most likely a wiring or pump issue.

With ignition on and without starting you will I believe have 12V on both wires to the pump. When you put the kill switch in 'run' one leg should drop to ground (fuel pump relay does this).
Doesn't see the light and decide power is good. It needs 12V across the pump, and 12V on both wires is 0V across the pump.

Also, you will only see 12V there for about 5 seconds.

Put ignition in run and listen for the relay when you put the kill switch in run. You should hear it. If not, the relay is bad or the fuse has blown possibly.

    Hi Degs,

The wire running to the pump has three wires inside it. With the ignition on and the kill switch on 'run' I hear the relay click, and I get power to one of the 3 wires going to the pump, the other two have no power. I'm going to stop and get a real meter on my way home and see what I get for voltage on that wire. If only one wire has power, what would that mean? I definitely hear the relay click, and when I hit the start button the bike turns over and over. The only problem seems to be the bike won't prime.

Do you hear the relay click on and off again 5 seconds later? If so, I would say the pump is bad. I would try rapping on it with a small hammer gently. It might just be stuck.

I just hear it click once, when I turn everything on, it "clicks" and then that's it.

What happens if you toggle the kill switch? It should click off and then click on again (corresponding to the off/on of the kill switch)

Then you're not hearing the fuel pump relay. That's another relay. Probably headlight or something.

The fuel pump not priming is because the ecu is not happy that all systems are satisfied. Sidestand if it's in neutral, all sensors (maf, tps etc). Do you have a flashing efi light?

I don't know how to go about jumping the pump, and I don't want to risk causing any further damage if this is a simple issue. I don't claim to be a mechanic, I'm just trying to figure out the problem without any additional problems to the bike. Jumping off my car's battery seems real dangerous to overload something.

Nope, the efi light is not flashing. The bike is on a stand, kickstand is up, bike is in neutral, I pull the clutch in and everything.

Re: CBR 600 F4i - No Fuel Pump Prime

By the way, that third wire is for what is listed as the "Fuel Reverse Sensor", which I'm guessing is supposed to be the fuel reserve sensor, aka the gas light. It shouldn't affect the fuel pump, and the wire should be brown with a green stripe. If you are getting 12 volts between the two wires to the fuel pump, then it seems everything up to that point is working. I would try jumping it, as it can't hurt (CAR OFF). If that doesn't work it seems to be a problem with the fuel pump itself.

So just hook jumper cables from my car to the bike battery leaving the car off?

Yup. All that does is eliminate the bike battery as a source of failure (which is unlikely given what you've said, but not impossible). The car battery and the bike battery are the same technology at the same voltage, one just has more current available if it is needed.

jump the battery not the pump....just like jumping a car, they are both 12v so dont worry, just make sure the car aint runnin.

Is the nose of the bike on the bike? The tipover sensor is in the nose.
