    Paging Kurlon - XR100R

So I picked up this you from Garandman a few weeks ago
    Paging Kurlon - XR100R-imageuploadedbytapatalk1404918198-614960-jpg

A basically just two issues (we talked about pre sale) are it smokes until it warms up and it runs a bit rough and dies sometimes off choke. Top end could use a refresh, I'm thinking while I'm there, is it worth it to do a big bore kit, maybe more? I should add, I'm 6'3" 235 lbs, not convinced an extra pony or 2 is going to make a world of difference with me in the saddle.

Also, a bit of guidance on the cheapest route to 'tard this thing? Other than maybe teaching the girl (5'3" 115 lbs, think it's perfect for her!) to ride dirt on it, this is going to be a pit bike, tool around the neighborhood toy.

    Re: Paging Kurlon - XR100R

cheapest tard - get 16" front rim off a XR80R (same drum up front, drops right in), wrap both in bt45's (90 or 100 width)

should not die off choke - check pilot jet and passageways

imho - you're right about the big bore kit - spend a couple hundred bucks to go from 8hp to 10hp?

if you want a faster tard suited for an adult, get a "big wheel" CR80...it has plenty of power stock

    I just re-inherited this one

    Re: Paging Kurlon - XR100R

Advice I have received regarding running these machines in mini-gp racing:
    you *need* the following:
bbr rear spring - $80 new wherever
    xr80 front wheel - $50 ebay
bridgestone tires - $2-300 (all other tires are crap, we've tried them all)
catchcan/safety wiring - free (rig something up and drill some holes)
preload spacers for forks and fork oil - $10 for 80w gear oil. rig something up for spacer. one of our guys uses stacks of pennies, I used a slice of lightning rod

    good ideas:
moose racing guards - $50 ebay (so you don't buy levers every time it crashes)
ims shifter - $30 ebay (folding and solid steel)
    shorty levers - $20 ebay
lower bars - $15 bikemaster on amazon if you don't buy fancy brands, $60 for fancy protapers .

    Re: Paging Kurlon - XR100R

    Bore kit - http://www.firepowerminis.net/index....oduct_id=30460

Dual sporting - How much is your time worth?
    Plan A - Cheap bastid
    - XR80 wheel as noted
    - Bridgestone BT45s, buy a test of take offs from one of the guys running CAMMRA, etc. New they're about $90 each
    - Real men wire up their own stators! https://home.comcast.net/~pgailunas/stator.html
    - http://tboltusa.com/store/headlight-kit-p-5384.html

Plan B - Do it up proper
    - Break out your wallet - http://www.procycle.us/bikepages/crf100-xr100.html

Before you jump on a bore kit, pull the engine and see if it's really the rings that are bad, or if it's pulling oil from the head (guide seals) or a bad head gasket, etc. A bore kit by itself isn't going to make much of a difference, and those engines don't take kindly to real hop up work. If it needs rings and a bore job to clean the cylinder up, slap a 120 on as a cheap way of solving the problem, not for performance. If the head needs some TLC, again eval based on what you find and there may be a cheap path that will net some perf at the same time.

On the rough running, that screams carb, I'd buy new brass and give it a proper cleaning.

    Re: Paging Kurlon - XR100R

Rubi, you know the CRF100F we got? It won't idle unless the choke is half on, either! So apparently "They all do that."

The advice I got was 1. Live with it. 2. Rejet. I listed some jet #'s in the Riding with Junior thread.

    Re: Paging Kurlon - XR100R

    What?

No...I've owned a couple of these bikes and it should idle all day. If it needs choke to stay running, the pilot circuit isn't getting enough gas and you're compensating with the choke. If it's been cleaned (use carb spray and ultrasonic cleaner if necessary), then use correct size pilot jet that's big enough to let more gas through and she will putt putt like an idling lawnmower

    Re: Paging Kurlon - XR100R

Thanks for the replies guys. Just got an message from Dana with some good info on jetting, appears to be pretty lean stock. I'm gonna start with the carb and see if I can get it running decent for the remainder of the year. It's such a cool old bike it may be in for a resto-mod this winter. Really wouldn't take much to make this thing shine.

    Breakdirt, that CR80 is SICK

    Bubs, thanks for the list

Kurlon, good info, I'll probably go the cheap bastid route unless it looks like cylinder needs to be honed. Thanks!

Do you have an ultrasonic cleaner? That and quality JIS screwdrivers are probably the best tools I've ever come across for working on old carbs.

    Re: Paging Kurlon - XR100R

I used an ultrasonic cleaner on it last season and the carb appears to be a fairly new replacement. Also turned up the idle a bit. This is a XR/CRF 100 "thing" and rejetting is the common solution.

Sounds like it's clean already from garandman...unscrew that old jet and screw in the new one!

    Kurlon - what is that??

OP - they're fun bikes...I even built one with the non-"big wheel" setup...and it was STILL just as fun as the one w' 17's!

I thought he was talking about constant velocity carbs

had one on the dr200...it worked, but can't say it felt any better than the other kind...but then again, a dr200 doesn't feel better than....anything?

    Re: Paging Kurlon - XR100R

OK, here's one - how the hell do you get the front brake cable off the arm? I tried unscrewing the nut, and wound up having to bend the hell out of the cable to get it on and off. There must be a better way.

I ordered new jets from the dealer so I'll see how that does with the idle. After adjusting the valves and timing chain the thing ticks over like a clock - as long as the choke is at the half stop. Shut it off and it doesn't want to idle.

    Re: Paging Kurlon - XR100R

    what? no, lol

while unscrewing the nut on the brake perch provides *some* slack, the rest of it comes from the adjustment down the cable near on the fork. There should be a couple nuts there. When those nuts are screwed far apart, slack in the cable is decreased. When the nuts are screwed close together, you get a lot of slack, and that should be enough to get the cable off the perch. It will require a little bit of wiggling, but not so much that you're bending the hell out of the cables

the choke makes me 90% confident that the pilot jet will fix your idle issue

what size do you have in there, and what size did you buy?

    Re: Paging Kurlon - XR100R

Ok so just to add a bit more info. I fired it up on full choke, it switches over to choke off just fine. I let the bike idle, and it will do so for about 2 minutes. Then (over the course of about 3 seconds) the idle ramps up about 1/4 of the way and it dies and won't restart again until it's cold. Thoughts?

Good question. That's somewhere to start. Does it have a safety circuit to prevent overheating?

    Re: Paging Kurlon - XR100R

No, but failing coils, either ignition or exciter will behave this way. You'll get spark until they get heat in them at which point thermal expansion turns a crack into a gap which kills your spark. Wait for it to cool down, things come back together and you can run again.

    Re: Paging Kurlon - XR100R

did you crack the carb yet?

this is a bit of an anomaly in terms of carb/jetting...I have no idea why the engine would start to race from idle, then die...unless it was getting more/less gas in the carb based on jets falling out or the float being out...need to know that the baseline fuel figures are in place before I suggest going to the electrical...

    I'd recommend a few things:
1.) spark - change the plug - dunno if heat has anything to do with it. At the very least, pull it off, ground it by touching the electrode of threads to the engine, and hand-push the kicker to make sure there's a fat blue spark. If not, or if not sure, get a new plug.
2.) pull the carb off, check the float. Sometimes "letting it cool down" can give the symptoms you're describing, but really means the bike is "letting the carb fill up w' gas again" as if the float pin fell out and the float is bouncing around in the bowl. Also make sure that when you lower/raise the float, gas gets into the carb, and lastly, make sure the jets haven't unscrewed and fallen out.
    -----------------
    do this and report back

3.) while you're in there (and unrelated to its current symptoms) - tell me what jetting you have
