FPV camera setup on a racebike

Somebody needs to pioneer this idea! I dont have the cash, but it would be awesome to have an onboard camera live-streaming back to a laptop in the pits. There must be some drone nuts on this board that also race...

People do that all the time. It's built into the new gopros.

Seriously? I have never seen this. You are talking about something other than the WiFi preview feature on the GoPro?

I've been poking at this a bit, looks like the current go to answer is one of the vid setups RC hobbyists use. They have the requisite range, problem is they're all based on standard NTSC, so 480i analog. Price isn't bad though, you can get a full setup under $200.

It would be really cool if the race announcements could be recorded and then podcast online

If the FM transmitter is working, recording those is easy.

How cool would it be if friends and family could watch live from home?

That would be amazing. Twitch channels for amateur racers is something I'd get behind.

Yeah, I was thinking it'd be cool to have a live feed of the pit area or something with Bruce's announcing once wifi is up.

I already am setup for Youtube live events, and have a couple USB SDRs so we can get pristine digital reception of the on track FM. Just need to choose a video source (I have web cams) and I can make it happen.

Re: FPV camera setup on a racebike

What you hear over the PA traditionally is also broadcast on 88.9 FM (IIRC) so you can listen in with a radio. It made chilling in your truck with the AC going nice 'cause you could listen to the racing and not miss any calls. There have been some issues with the transmitter though since it got nailed by lightning awhile back and the transmission usually has just been a dead carrier lately.

You have no idea how tempted I am by that little beauty... Unfortunately Project Stupid has taken up the fun budget for now.

FPV would be easy, you could even put it on a small gimbal so the camera stays level while you lean.

Wicked cool. My first thought was to put it at the rink so it could follow me in hockey. It will have no problem tracking me....
