New Palmer track video

    Re: New Palmer track video

Pretty much. However, to be honest I hate stupid loud bikes myself.

With current technology, you can get all the power you need without being ridiculously loud.

It sucks riding behind someone with a very loud exhaust... you can barely hear your own bike!

125cc machines should get half price track days.

Seems like a lot of decreasing radius turns and maintenance throttle time based on the video. What is the option of running the opposite direction? I know it is still early to assess, but curious all the same.

    Re: New Palmer track video

I just watched Keith's video. A few observations:

    1. The instructors were cruising (expectedly), so it's hard to draw conclusions about the track by watching these test videos.

    2. It might have been Paul that pointed this out earlier, but the speedo on the main straight hardly goes over 100? That jives with Paul's comments about this being a small bike track. If that turns out to be true, it would be slightly disappointing. Loudon is already a small bike track, Thompson isn't entirely a big bike track so to have a 3rd track that's tight/choppy doesn't add variety to our area. But I suppose to have 3 tracks within an hour of the city is in itself a gift, so in perspective, I think we should all be happy/grateful.

    3. What really concerns me is the dust/dirt run offs. One of the bikes I am bringing has a high probability of breaking down (having electrical woes), so if I put my hand up and pull over, I feel like I would go straight down the moment I hit the dust. TTD guys, any thoughts on how someone could safely pull over if necessary?

Same as anywhere, THe dirt has more traction than grass. You will not go down by pulling off. Especially on a motard!

The track is not tight and choppy. It is curvy and awesome. There really aren't any straights is all.

No I am worried about the RSV4. Its had some sort of weird electrical short that puts it in limp mode at high revs, and I have to pull over when that happens. I am weary of this because there is really no place to pull over at NYST where it's happened a few times now - you step on the grass and you are going down immediately.

I've replaced parts on it and I will also be bringing a reliable bike so this won't happen more than once, but I am still weary of all the dirt and literally no run offs for people that veer off.

I don't think this is the place to test a bike that is known to be not working. For all those reasons, you are going to cost everyone else riding time. I think I'd sort it out on a quite parking lot or something. Or take it to a mechanic? That's not something that will just go away.

One rider pulling over and sitting out the session is going to cost everyone riding time? Or are you saying this track is so unsafe that one cannot pull over to safety? What if a guy's bike is blowing oil all over the place? He needs to pull over, correct? Yeah, thanks for the advice that electrical problems will not just go away. Already have an appointment with seacoast, already on the path towards fixing it.

Happy to just bring one bike. I will email Tony to check.

Not trying to be a dick, but I think it's a bad idea. There are many spots where pulling over would require us to flag the session. It all depends where you break down. That happens at other tracks too. Mechanicals do end up costing people riding time. When you see this place you will understand. There are no slip roads to get a bike back to the pits. It has to come back ON track. So even if you are safely out of the way, the next group is waiting.

I understand. I emailed Tony and will take this offline. FYI, when a bike goes into limp mode, you can still ride it back to the pits on its own power. Just slowly.

I think your opinions count, Paul. But try and communicate them without sounding condescending or stating the obvious. Especially if you are coaching for TTD.

I rode my street bike (02 VFR) for our test day - stock suspension, highway-squared tires - and even taking it easy, I still saw 120 at the kink on the straight. Palmer has new pavement, smooth as glass, with no terrible Loudon-like transitions...but yes it is a more technical track than, say, either NJMP track. IMO, also more fun, consequently.

^This. A TD isn't really the place to be troubleshooting.

There are definitely plenty of places to get off track if you need to do so; Palmer is no different than any other in that regard. However, do you really want to chance the bike dying and you ending up stopped in a crash zone...in which case that's now a throwaway corner for everyone else for the rest of the session (if they even let the session continue). Alternatively, bike dies somewhere in the back of the track. Red flag. Now the crash truck has to head out 1.3 miles to get you, and 1+ miles back. Either way, yes you're costing others some form of riding time.

Beating a dead horse here, I know - but just trying to explain Paul's point.
EDIT: Crap, Paul already beat me to the punch!

I thought Paul's post was honest, simple and to the point?

Jeesh! I come to check out things and find this shit storm!?!?!

As for pulling off or pulling over, it is a very simple thing to do on ANY track.

Every time you exit a corner, the natural line is to the outside. Simply come out of any corner and pull over to the INSIDE of the track and you are completely safe. Hell, you can stay on the pavement, and put your side stand down if you are really worried about riding in dirt/grass.

Walk over to the inside wall and have a seat on it.

We'll let you sit there until a few minutes before the session is over and then come pick you up.

As for being big or small bike friendly... I ride a 1000 and this track is a blast. That said, others on their SV's were able to hang with me everywhere but the front straight... so it's ALL bike friendly.

No issues Paul, I never read too much into how people interact on forums. I usually wait till I meet in person and shake hands. I do think you (and all the other 'big bad TTD staffers') need to hear a few things though, I’ll PM you guys directly, not appropriate for discussion here.
