Re: Cabot Trail, worth the trip?

Did it on bicycles in 2005. I remember talking with some moto guys at a coffee shop during a break and they were complaining bitterly about the quality of the roads. The pavement was pretty broken up and not much fun on my bike (and the black flies were off the charts in June) but the scenery and people were terrific. The Alexander Graham Bell museum is definitely worth a visit as well as the Glen Breton distillery.

In fact, we were talking about doing the whole Nova Scotia thing again on motos this time. But I think we'd go later in the season to miss the black flies. We did Cumberland (Bay of Fundy), Cape Breton, Halifax, Lunenburg, Risers Beach, Peggy's Cove, Digby Neck and have a whole photo show's worth of quality images from the trip.

We took 3 days on bicycles to get around the Cabot. On a moto we could easily do it in a day - but miss much of the character one gets from a slower trip.

To the OP - How are you planning to get there?

It's a long drive through Maine and New Brunswick to NS and the Cat from Bar Harbor to Yarmouth isn't running anymore. Not sure if anything took its place.

There's a ferry from Portland to Yarmouth, but Google says that's a day's ride from the Cabot Trail.

Yeah, 3 days to Cape Breton and back from Mass is not leaving you much time to enjoy the trip. Just got back from there and we took a week to do it.

Take the ferry to Yarmouth. Once there, run along the southern coast (Lunenburg, Peggy's Cove, etc) to Halifax and over to Cape Breton and the Cabot. On the loop back head to Digby and take the ferry to St John - don't miss the reversing falls. Then head back to home through NB and Maine.

More like a 4-5 day trip unless you want to turn it into an Iron Butt sort of thing.

I believe the Vomit Comet (The 'Cat) has been replaced by a more conventional ferry. That's really all I've got...

The ferry cross at night from Portland to Yarmouth and returns during the day, so taking the ferry to get there also counts as a night's lodging.

The Cabot Trail is well worth a trip, but it's highly impractical in only three days (unless you're starting from northeastern Maine).

With only three days to work with, it might be worth looking at the Catskills and northern PA instead. Lots of great riding there.

Well worth the trip, but 3 days won't do it IMO.

    That was my original plan.

We did the Catskills last fall so I was looking for a new region to explore.

If you only have 3 days you're far better of heading to the DAKs...

Just returned from my 9th tour of Nova Scotia and Cape Breton with 6 other awesome folks. I think this will get you to my FaceBook photo album...

And yeah, fulfilled a bucket list item and spend the night at Meat Cove...awesome!
