I'm in Maine. Problem is I'm heading into the woods tomorrow at oh too early o'clock and won't be back till Sunday night. I am going to get some of the Cherry-Lime on order soon though.

Don't I repeat don't do it!!! You will not make shit. Its a job for the love of bikes not money. There is a big difference then loving to ride bikes & working with them everyday. Like other said kills your love to ride before racing I hated even hearing a motorcycle when I was not working which was 1 day off a week if lucky. Before racing I would be lucky to ride 2x a year & those where test rides. Also race season is when bike shops are busy so good luck finding a place that will let you take off to go racing with our short season. Sav give me a call & I'd be happy to help in anyway I can. There is one option that might fit your bill

Immediately the thoughts of spending the money on motorcycle related stuff came up. It all goes back to that.

Re: Discussion: Motorcycle Related Career Paths

At Woodcraft, our guys tend to like working here (at least they tell me they do ) and we ride all the time - moto, woods, track days, race, you name it. Most of our staff rides all the time! Our focus is on customer service and doing right by people (this is not a sales pitch) for a number of reasons - not the least of which is that when you have autonomy to make decisions that take care of people it makes work a much more enjoyable place to be. Do we have guys making six figures, no, but they do OK. We genuinely enjoy what we do and a couple of our guys have little side gigs that they enjoy making extra money when not at work. (buy/selling stuff is a common one) This is all good with me.

So, a did fib a little in that this is a small sales pitch for someone looking to work in the industry. We need a staff member who wants to help Woodcraft move to the next level. This person would do some sales and customer service, but there would be a large component that focuses on ad creation, marketing and dealer relationship building on many levels. Do you have marketing, advertising, and social media skills? Are you creative, positive and enthusiastic? We have medical and 401K benefits for all full time staff. Interested? Email info@woodcraft-cfm.com.

Sorry for the hi-jack....I wish all you guys success on your career paths and hope that this success brings you to the track in one way or another!

Screw that, sponsor a unicorn or two. For thousands a day you can help keep impoverished one offs on the track where they don't belong. In addition to spending your money poorly we'll occasionally forget to tag you in pictures posted to facebook of your sponsored bike so you can see what kind of weird rules bending shenanigans your contributions are making possible. 771 Racing is more than happy to help you avoid the worry of having money burning holes in your pockets, let it burn in ours instead.

Re: Discussion: Motorcycle Related Career Paths

I'm in the car biz and I want to punch a baby on most days. At this point I'm working on the greatest schedule ever M-F 9-6ish, for being in this industry; while managing to bring home a very good paycheck.

Before I got into bikes I was always a car guy and the only perks of working in the dealer level are you actually get to interact with the product.

I wanted to get into the moto industry but in this area its tough. and if your dealer level you had better hope you store does well selling other stuff when there is snow. Like someone said above, getting into a dealer on the F&I side of biz will benefit the most $$$ wise at the expense of you free time and soul.

That woodcraft offer sounds awesome btw!

Re: Discussion: Motorcycle Related Career Paths

    i am a service adviser/writer at a HD dealer.
overall, i really like my job. some days are better than others but i still really like it. i wish it paid a bit more but i do ok. ill still be making slightly more than minimum wage when that goes up to $15 p/hr so theres that.
ive worked in many dealerships and independent shops for the last 15+ years. i will say that working at an HD dealer is a lot different than those. people dont just come in to buy parts and leave, they come in just because. there is a definite lifestyle. i dont quite get it, but whatever.
i see the people that say dont do it and it sucks and youll hate it but thats not true. some people try to make their hobby their job. those people will most likely hate their job. this is my job. i just happen to have a hobby that is similar. one does not influence or affect the other

What's it take to open a dealership in your lifetime?

I met a yamaha dealership owner (he has about 140 of them on the west coast..so you would need to do thia awhile) at an unveiling for a new sxs and he has a razor, bikes, quads, dirt bikes, harleys, and we shot the shit over beers in long beach over every cool bike from the grom to rc51 to old dirtbikes to the africa twin...that dude loved moto and seemed to do very well

After working at my moms retail store for years, you literally could not pay me enough money to own a retail store ever again. Well, I guess you could pay me enough since then I could pay other people ... but yeah, never owning a retail store ever again.
