    03 SV Track Bike Build

I recently saved a former track bike from going back to the street. It's a 03 SV650s that I bought on here, the previous owner didn't have much history on it. I'm fixin to get back on the track, it's been 2 yr, and perhaps begin racing as well.

It has a few track bits on it like TFW setup in front, gsxr1000 rear shock, banged up hotbodies bodywork, clip ons. I've been chipping away a few hours a night after work to get it sorted before I catch a few track days at the end of this season. Thus far I have done plugs, oil & filter, properly fitted the body work and am in process of completing brake pads and fluid, 520 chain 15/45, yoshi slip on. The spray bomb is getting stripped from the tank, wheels, calipers, forks.

The only issue I've seen so far is the idle is around 3000 rpm. I can force the throttle tube closed that last little bit and it drops to approx 1200 which is desirable but I can't seem to figure why that last bit of closure won't occur on it's own. I've tried the idle adjustment screw and also experimented with the throttle cable tension with no luck. Any thoughts?

Ahh then you'd be the perfect person to ask... it's missing a windscreen, does a factory svs windscreen fit that fairing?

I have a second SV for the street and it idles at 1250rpm which aligns with what the manual says. You think that 3k isn't concerning?

Idle has likely been adjusted up by the PO. Pretty common for track bikes, they say it's a poor man's slipper clutch. Basically bumping the idle up decreases the effects of engine braking under decel.

He might be referring not idling at 1200 for track use. A lot of us (or maybe just some of us) up the idle on the SV for track/racing. Water cooler talk says around 3K RPM.

Edit: what might be more concerning to me is your statement about "forcing" the throttle tube closed. That should snap all the way shut.

The bike was certainly tracked in the past and whomever had it before went as far as safety wiring calipers so I imagine adjusting the idle as a poverty slipper clutch isn't unlikely. Thanks for the info.

    Nice dude!

I would worry about the throttle tube though. Does it snap back right away and then your force it?

Yeah, it's strange that the idle would go down if you physically roll the throttle closed a little more.

Open up the throttle tube housing. See if there's anything strange going on in there.

no the bodywork comes with a gsxr1000ish screen if you want a perfect fit and look contact hotbodies you can also use a GSXR1000 screen not sure of the year but that looks like this Crystal Windscreen Windshield Screen Protector for Suzuki GSXR1000 K3 2003 2004 | eBay

^^ if someone dumped an r6 tube in there as a cheap quick turn and didnt "MOD" it right that could be doing it.

Safety wiring the calipers isn't a big expense...an aftermarket slipper clutch is. Not discounting that something could be wrong, but don't assume that the PO having drilled some holes and wired the brakes means they wouldn't have adjusted the idle up.

he threw a double negative "isn't unlikely" at us, I think he agrees with you.

Re: 03 SV Track Bike Build

I don't usually strip on Thursdays but...

03 SV Track Bike Build-img_3938-jpg03 SV Track Bike Build-img_3939-jpg

Taking off the layers of paint seems to be pretty easy with this cleanstrip paint stripper. First I gave the air DA a shot but the contours were too difficult to get into. There are a few cracks that need to be patched and filled. Should be painting next week. Any suggestions for high quality spray paint? I may just plastidip it for the remainder of the season and get crafty over the winter.

Do not plastidip. My garage mate tried it.. not the results he was expecting.

Me, I go for this stuff : Majic Tractor, Truck & Implement Spray Enamel, 11 oz., Kubota Orange - For Life Out Here
Quality can't be beat. Well, yeah, it probably can be.

I got some HouseofKolor in aerosol off amazon and then ordered this stuff..... The 2K clear is AMAZING! looks like you shot it with a gun once you know how to lay it up.

Re: 03 SV Track Bike Build

Plastidip can be done in one day if you want it to look semi-decent in a pinch. I used it as a "temporary" solution like you described when I ran out of time repairing my tail before a race round. It does not crash particularly well. It can also be tricky getting it to lay flat without developing little pin-hole bubbles. I have read that letting the cans sit in warm water before you use them will help. Also, be careful with light colors. You need to do base coats of white or grey before you use any of the yellows or "blaze" colors.

I forgot- the most annoying part of all! You can only clean it with soapy water. Pretty much everything else will cause bad things to happen. Why does this matter? If you put adhesive vinyl number plates on, then need to pull them off later, you will never be able to get the residue off. Next time you put vinyl over the same spot, or try to shoot more plastidip, it will be problematic.

The track bike went into hiding for the winter but came out for MDW and got a lot of bodywork done. If I didn't mention before this stuff should have gone in the garbage. There were so many bad cracks and damage but I went for it anyway. I used duplicolor perfect match spray bombs form autozone. Here are some progress pictures.

Lots of glass/bondo work and shaping/sanding

    Second coat clear all sprayed

Hope to compound and buff some night this week. Everything came out awesome considering what I started with. I spent a lot of time on prep work which really makes a difference, probably too much time for a track bike but I like to make things look good.

Re: 03 SV Track Bike Build

Have made a bit more progress on the bike - test fitting the fairings and very pleased with the results. Also reminded myself what interesting artifacts I found in my fuel tank when I disassembled over the winter. The disassembly resulted from the one track day I had last year on this new to me bike at the time. The bike was having fueling issues at WOT above ~6-7k rpm in gears 2nd and up. What I found was caked rust all around the fuel filter which I proceed to clean thoroughly and reassemble, I believe this to be an ethanol issue. There is a distinct line in the tank where almost a layer of water looks to have rusted the tank slightly. No heavy or loose rust so I buttoned it back up. The most amazing find was a good sized bolt as well as an electrical fitting that belongs on a electrical box. Very odd. I have to imagine they fell in on accident while the cap was open. I have not tested the bike yet but am confident the acceleration problem was due to these issues. Looking forward to Loudon on Monday to get back to the track for the first time this season and get both bikes' thermosman suspensions adjusted.
