Oil and oil filter questions (please help)

Fuggin hell... aight, i need some reasurance here.... just swung back to AutoBone & they didn't have any Mobil 1 that wasn't long lasting crapola w/o the additives/modifiers or whatever... so i asked a dude what he suggested for something w/ a wet clutch & he recommended this:

Mobil 1 V-twin 20W-50 4 cycle Motorcycle Oil...
"blah blah blah... high performance, fully synthetic motorcycle oil specially formulated for V-Twin engines. Protects against harmful deposits that can accumulate over time in V-twin engines... Outstanding stability & resistance to thermal breakdown under extreme high temps that can be generated by air cooled, V-Twin engines" etc etc...

i asked him if it's fine in an I4 that's about to spin 14,500 rpm's & he's said "No problem, good stuff"... so whatever, i bought it since i can always return it if you guys say "no go"

suggestions, questions comments?

Dunno, should be fine, oil's oil, as long as it doesn't have friction modifiers.

I use castrol syntech in the 6r, dunno why though, I use mobil 1 in the car, but always been syntech in the bike. I think it's because of that commercial they ran a few years ago, you know, where they fill one engine with syntech oil and the other engine with regular oil, then they drain them, and run them, and they syntech engine just keeps running and running and running and running, and then dennis leary shows up and is like "fuck you all I use syntech" or something I don't remember but the point is that engine ran without oil for a long time just because they used syntech that's pretty bitchin if you ask me I'm a sucker for marketing

Does your manual specify any particular weight of oil? 10w-40 seems about right?

Do you think there is a reason Mobil doesen't put "Specifically for V-twin motors, or anything else you feel like putting it in as well." on there?

btw if you're really in a pinch, go find a Wal-Mart Supercenter. They typically have MC filters and if all else fails you can buy some Shell Synthetic Rotella T 5w-40 (diesel truck oil) and run that. But they also have the Mobil 1 there for bikes most of the time...

Typically your oil fill cap will tell you what viscosity to run. If not then it is sometimes located on the engine block or case cover right near the fill.

I will say that 20-50W is a little thick to be running in your bike. IIRC most bikes run 5-30W or 10-40W.

I'm no oil expert , but I was told is you put in full synthetic oil you can't go back, But if you use the semi-synthetic you can.

Anybody? Anybody? Hello? Is this thing on?

Did you ever get your valve clearances check? Might want to take a look at this if not.

IMO far too much fretting is done over oil, and not nearly enough over the shit that matters, like valve clearances.

20/50 is a bit thick for this time of year You may even notice the bike cranking over a bit slower on cooler mornings
I always use a 10/40 MC oil in all the bikes and always a OE filter, never once used a full synthetic oil in anything bike related

Old posts ftw.

So I get it, regular for the first few K then synthetic, right?

BTW, I put the synthetic in the gsxr this weekend. She feels OH so nice. Going to enjoy now.

I put that motul shit I got from VIR in the racebike last weekend. It still feels like a shitty EX, just like it did when I put rotella in there. But maybe that's because I let the oil sit for two years. I thought it would age well, but I took a whiff and I think it was corked. Damn.

Motul E-Tech 10/40 and Fram filters in the Strom, the Wing and the previous CB1000 sidecar rig. Lots of happily running motorcycles.
