Jammed Choke

bike: 04' kawasaki 636 condition: used but practically new.

Some how my choke is stuck. I was able to open it up a little bit but it seems that it wont close all the way causing the bike to rev high in idle. Has this happened to anyone before? I want to start a thread before I take it apart and tackle the problem.

are you sure it is stuck open and some j-ass didn't mess with your idle adjust knob in a parking lot somewhere? I thought the 636 was injected guess not, also you can get some cable lube and spray it down from the top inside the cable and that could loosen it up with minimal "surgery" if the lever is hard to move

Any cable gets worn & sticky after a while, but this sounds soon for choke cable

Also check to see if it has been rerouted or if any cable ties are missing to hold it in place

I recently had the choke cable on my SV replaced, (130k) even after it was replaced I had a slight problem when turning the handlebars, had to add more zip ties to keep it from shifting around

just curious. Is there a certain type of cable lube to use or would wd-40 work well?

i know they sell stuff specifically designed for lubing cables. I personally have never done it but i have been reading a bit about it and short of a pinched cable this seems to describe what the problem might be

The 04 636 is. That is a fast idle lever. Similar end result ensues as a choke but it's occuring in a different way then a regular carbed/choke.

Didn't get much of a chance yesterday to look at it. I should have time tonight... Doesn't look like i'm going to make it to MN tonight either so I'll have a little time after work to look at it more.

Couldnt find any pinched cables. I'm going to take it apart, I think there might be somthing in the joint of the lever itself.

This damn rain is so depressing I don't want to look at my bike.

Why the hell would they choke an injected engine?

cold starts.

With the choke on it usualyy takes me two trys to kick it over. Without it on it usually starts right up... weird i know.

I'm still learning all the mechanics of my bike so i'm not sure if that's normal or not.

03 636 here, Had the same problem. Just keep playing with it back and forth and it will work itself free. Trust me. Took me a good 15 minutes but it will. And when it does lube it up. Also, get in the practice of moving the lever every ride even if its hot. I never us mine unless it is very cold, But move it back and forth a few times when your stopped waiting for a buddy to get ready.

Only Chuck Norris could choke an injected engine.

They don't, really. It's a 'fast idle' lever...
