Problems with the EX - 500

Having an issue with my EX not starting-

When I go to start it, there is just a spinning sound from behind the motor and that is it.

Thoughts?

Nope, that's your starter clutch.

Pull the left engine cover, pull the flywheel and pull the starter clutch out. Just three little pins that cam onto the your crank. Once you clean them up, should work fine.

Mine was making a racket and worked intermittently when I got the bike. It's from the bike sitting for so long. With the flywheel removal tool (bolt) it's a ten minute job tops.

If the starter motor was spinning, it sure isn't the solenoid.

Failed starter gear. Crappy parts, crappy welds. Get it re-welded, or get another one. Careful pulling the flywheel off. The magnets break easy.

Well thats fantastic captain, but I usually get in around 11 or 12 on Fridays and my flights leave between 3 and 5 on Sundays, so thats hard to be any sort of a racing rockstar. Stop being a boob and come fix my bike

Stupid, Non-Mechanically inclined question -- Do I need to drain the oil to do this?

If you don't drain it first, you'll drain it when you pull the cover off.

throw it on it's side.
I replaced case covers at the track just by laying the bike on one side.
On it's side is the natural position for an ex racer anyways

Hrmmm, I'll either lay it on its side or drain it this weekend, probably drain it, although I already broke a key in it and can't get the gas tank open, so I'll probably crack the case too.
