It's not fuel injected. And it seemed to run better on 87 than the few times I tried 93.

My bike dont ping on 87 so I run 87, so if your bike does'nt ping on 87 run it.
Your wasting $ if you do high test just to run high test or mid grade.
Chuck you need to run tests to pin point the trouble.
& Remember no one cares for your bike like you do.
You live around Mark TLR man, I would bring it to him.

Bingo, you nailed it with this one. It runs fine with the low octane stuff, so I use it.

The problem seems to have gone away, at least for the moment. What I ended up doing was:

1) running 2 pints of Sea Foam through the fuel system. This seems to have done a great job at cleaning out the carbs and valves.

2) have run 92+ octane to clear out the Sea Foam

3) cleaned and re-oiled the air filters

4) had Degsy clean the float bowls, pilot jets, and main jets

25,500

Had PK check the valve clearances in March and they were fine. She runs strong. This is the first issue I've had and it SEEMED to be contaminated fuel or clogged jets.

kawi tells me to put 87 in my 03 with FI, i put in 87... most people run higher octanes because they think it makes their bikes faster

I used to run Cam II racing fuel in my '93 GSX-R because it smelled good. (at $3.50 a gallon, back in '94)

My 02 fz1 says to use 87 (I didn't know until past winter) I always ran 93

The jet kit I installed this winter says 87 OCTANE ONLY so now I use 87 and it runs great. plus you now the gas is used more than the 93 with the prices these days

One last thought (a quote actually) "If you use a higher octane than what you need, all your doing is pissing up a rope" anyone to guess who said that wins a free cookie

Very true. You're doing more harm than good running higher octane than your motor was designed to run...

Unfortunately for me, the TLR likes the expensive stuff. Runs like ass on 87-89, decent on 91, and far better on 93+. Oh well...

OK, my issue is back. It actually never went away, it just got a lot better for a couple of weeks.

To recap what I've done:
  • Ran 2 complete pints of Sea Foam in 2 full tanks of gas.
  • Cleaned my Factory Air Box Plus foam air filters (they definitely needed it)
  • Cleaned the bottom of the carbs (float bowls, pilot and main jets)
  • I've been running "graded" 92+ octane gas, since the problem started

The former owner had installed a Two Brothers full exhaust and a Factory Air Box Plus jet kit. The main jets that he installed are 140's.

It's always seemed to run a little lean, especially because I tend to get 40-45mpg. The plugs were brownish.

It bogs between 3000-4000 rpms. It runs like when you're running low on fuel in the main tank and have to switch over to the reserve tank. It just seems like it's starving for fuel. The problem also seems to get worse when the tank gets more empty. (or is that less full?)

Could the fuel strainer possibly be clogged or really dirty? There's a fuel strainer inside the tank, which is accessible by removing the fuel valve.

Or, could it be the diaphragm that's restricting flow? Maybe a vacuum issue with it opening the diaphragm? The fuel valve is vacuum actuated. Fuel should only flow when vacuum is applied. Or maybe it's a vacuum issue? How do you diagnose that?
Here's a diagram:

have you changed the fuel filter lately?

vacuum issues are best found with spray either

The fuel filter is the screen. It's a gravity fed, vacuum actuated fuel system. I haven't looked at the screen since I've owned it. That's on the list for the weekend.
