| 03 SV650 Idle Hunting/Surging Hi,
I just recently have been experiencing a new problem with my 2003 SV650N. When I start the bike, everything seems normal. The bike warms up and idles as is usual until it just about reaches normal operating territory (180ish). At this point, the idle will be begin hunting/surging from a low of about 900 to a high of about 1500. Back and forth. The bike idles at the correct speed up until this point. If I rev the engine, the revs climb and can be held at a higher RPM without trouble. As soon as the engine is allowed to idle, it will begin surging again. It is not a regular/constant oscillation. Instead, the bike will sound like it starts running on one cylinder, will do this for a few seconds (the amount of time is variable), and then then return to a normal or slightly high idle. Then the process repeats itself. I replaced the plugs once again, made sure the spark plug boots were inserted tightly, and checked for a possible fuel tank vent hose problem so far. The old front cylinder plug looked a little dark but not bad enough to cause this kind of problem. The back plug showed good mixture and was the right color. The battery tested good on a simple tester, I'm going to break out the multi-meter tonight.
The bike sounds as though it is losing and then gaining a cylinder while the idle is surging. At the lowest RPM it reaches, the bike comes very close to stalling, head light dims, etc. and then suddenly jumps back up to 1500 only to hold this idle for a few moments before starting to drop again. The bike is not giving off any smoke and I didn't notice any excess gas smell.
I'd greatly appreciate any help with this problem. The weather here is perfect for riding and I used the bike for commuting plus fun riding just about every day. It is a 2003 SV650 with just under 15k on it. Bought with very low mileage about 1.5 years ago and I have nevery experience a problem with it like this before.
