do you guys trust Derek from performance cycles?I've got 23k on the clock for my '95 FZR600, and he said I probably don't have to do my valves until 26k. Trusting his judgment makes my life easier because then I won't have to do them before 4/28 Being skeptical of his judgment will cost me 5-1/2 hours of $72/hour labor plus parts btw, he's a nice guy otherwise...sort of tough, but nice |

Re: do you guys trust Derek from performance cycles?Pull the valve covers and check them yourself. Isn't that hard, and I have some feeler gauges you can borrow once I get back from san Francisco this weekend. If they are that far out of wack then you can do it yourself or have it done |

Re: do you guys trust Derek from performance cycles? Why dont you just check the valve clearances yourself? Not trying to be an ass but I do mine at every required interval and its easy. As long as you have a set of feeler gauges, and a manual showing you how to turn the motor to top dead center its easy. Bascially you pull the fairings etc, and the valve cover (single since you have an I4). Then you have to turn the motor either using the rear wheel or there is usually a large cover that you can remove from the crank case and insert the correct size socket and (depending on the bike) there is either site glass or another cover you have to unscrew so you can see the markings on the crank so you know when each SET of pistons are at TDC (top dead center). After you get one set to TDC you get your clearance from a manual for the each valve on each cylinder (each has and exhaust and an intake and they are usually different). You get your feeler gauge pick the right gauge/s and slide them in between the cam lobe and the top of the valve. If its in range you are set. Do this for each cylinder and each valve. Its really very easy and to pay some shmo 72 and hour (unless you time is more valuable) is to me not worth it. |
