transmission stuck in 1st gear: how to find problem? So after taking apart the clutch and re-assembling it piece, by piece, according to the fiche, taking it for a quick ride in 1st gear, the transmission on my XR80r is stuck in 1st gear any ideas on how I can figure out how to fix this short of splitting the cases? |

Re: transmission stuck in 1st gear: how to find problem? Are you going to be around this afternoon? I'll stop by with Matt... he'll know how to fix it. |

Re: transmission stuck in 1st gear: how to find problem? Most likely the problem isn't in the clutch... Long shot here - it does have the right level of oil in it - dry shift forks can stick. Does the gear shift move at all? Is it spinning on the splines on the shaft? Try taking the spark plug out, and rolling the bike back and forth gently while trying to shift the bike. |

Re: transmission stuck in 1st gear: how to find problem?2nd gear is up! Just kidding, it sounds like bent shift forks. Good luck. |

the shaft and shifter lever move, but it doesn't "click" the transmission into gear...make sense? |

Re: transmission stuck in 1st gear: how to find problem? The first thing to break is the last thing that was fixed. Either there was a pre-existing issue before you took the clutch basket apart (for reasons unknown), or there was a mistake in the reassembly of the clutch basket. If it were me, I'd be looking at what I missed on the repair-end of what's going on and then proceed from there... One thing you might want to check is the return spring for the shift shaft. Is the shifter returning to it's centered position after an attemped shift? |

Re: transmission stuck in 1st gear: how to find problem?possible return spring, I had one break the little pin that it fit around off once was an easy fix |

did you have to split the crankcase to do this? |

Re: transmission stuck in 1st gear: how to find problem?Maybe the fiche is wrong... ...rare but still possible |

Re: transmission stuck in 1st gear: how to find problem?ehhh...so I took off the clutch cover and found a spring floating around in oil in the bottom of the crankcase... it's a small spring a little larger than one found in a clickie pen; but could that be my problem? |

Re: transmission stuck in 1st gear: how to find problem? Of course not, that's the crankcase spring and it's job is to cushion the oil in the bottom of the crankcase. Put it back. |

Re: transmission stuck in 1st gear: how to find problem?which transmission part would this be a part of, and do I need to split the crankcase to re-install it? not so fast...just try to remember that when being a wise-ass, it's imperative that you are grammatically correct, because neglecting something as simple as misusing the contraction it's (contraction of "it is" or "it has") in place of the possessive "its" can dismiss all of your credibility |

Re: transmission stuck in 1st gear: how to find problem? No it was right behind the clutch basket, remove clutch basket and the shift shaft is behind it, the little pin is there it just threads out. the end broke on mine, the bike I had was a older xl 125 I would assume that they are similar in design |
