Who on here has repacked a header muffler? When I was at Mark's (TLRMan) place last week, he mentioned that my bogging issue might have been aggravated by the packing on my Two Bros system's muffler just aging. It is over 10 years old now. The loss of backpressure might have caused a leaner condition, adding to the bogging.

So, I've been thinking about repacking the muffler. Two Brothers sells a repack kit for $21 + shipping. (Two Brothers Racing, Repacking Kit)

Any thoughts?

What's a header muffler?

Is that kinda like Jumbo Shrimp?

don't repack your headers... that would be bad.
Repack the can. Takes all of 20 minutes... drill out the rivets, clean out the packing, replace it and rivet it all back together. I fill the joints with high temp silicone while I'm at it. Come to think of It I should proly repack the can on the KTM.
You should be able to dig up a thorough tutorial on a dirtbike site... thumper.com?

No, it's more like an EX500 Racer.

Some time this season, I'm sure, but she's not going to see any track time.

You will need some wire, not too heavy to tie the packing around the inner core prior to installing the can over the top. Roll the packing as tight as possible like a sleeping bag, use wire to hold it down after rolling it up around the core. Another set of hands is a good idea too.

I finally took Mark (TLRMan)'s advice and repacked the header can with a Twp Bros repack kit ($26, shipped) and what a difference!

It now seems to have the right amount of backpressure needed to make the CBR run smooth again.

A side note, the can had been repacked before. Somehow, I don't think TB wold have packed it the way it was packed. However, the packing didn't SEEM to be in that bad a shape. How do you know when the packing is gone anyway?

But it actually sounds lower in pitch and about the same in volume now.
