SS brake lines installed 2006 Yamaha R1

Just a quick write up.....

PITA! brake fluid is nasty stuff!

I found that it was much easier with all the front fairings removed to be sure no fluid hit the plastics and for ease of installation.

Drain brake fluid, remove brake line from the left caliper and pumped the brake lever until reservoir was empty.

remove brake lines and be sure not to get brake fluid on any plastics or the rotors.

install the new SS brake lines the following pics are the way I routed the brake lines, it wont necessarily be the same if you use other lines, but be sure the lines do not bind on anything check your steering from stop to stop check you clearance with you shocks compressed and lifted in the air... it is important to check this or you lines could get pinched or rub up against the front fender or even tap up against the horn. the latter is just annoying but important non the less.

pics

the lines coming from the master cylinder

I zip tied them to the front fork tube to keep them from moving around

I ripped the old rubber spacer from the old brake lines and just wrapped it around the new lines and installed the old guides to help space the new SS lines away from the fender.

just another pic of the routing i used for my bike.

and the final pic here is the final fit underneath the front fairing. they do not rub or bind against anything with the routing.

The final step after the lines are installed is to add new brake fluid and bleed the brakes.

this part is very tricky and time consuming, but is worth it to do it right.

If you know how to bleed brake lines then you should be all set but if not just be prepared to be patient and be sure that all the air is out of the lines.

well thats my quick write up, i am sure it a moot point here, but you never know, i spent the best part of 2 days searching and thought i was in over my head but took it one step at a time and accomplished a very good mod. I dont think i got any brake fluid on the rotors, i will know better when i get the first ride ill know a little better, but thats it the first real mod i have done to my bike and i am pumped to try em out, the feel is night and day, no more brake lever touching the throttle

did i mention i am an idiot.

Re: SS brake lines installed 2006 Yamaha R1

nice, I had SS brake lines on my '04 R1, loved 'em. Definitely a mod I wanna do to my new bike... after A&R race baffles, akro Y-pipe and headers, pcIII, smoked windscreen and whatever else... why do guys feel the incessant urge to customize/modify their vehicles

Re: SS brake lines installed 2006 Yamaha R1

Take something great and make it better with a little hard work and some time.

I definitely have been interested in the A&R baffles, but the more i think about putting money into my bike i think that a full system is the way to go.....

If your gonna do something do it right the first time. I got stuff in the works for next year definitely a new to me bike of some kind. so the money i am putting in to my bike is going to be stuff like brake lines small bang for your buck mods. yeah the A&R baffles are a cheap good mod, but i am not looking for any sort of changed power curve or improvement. I want to upgrade the rider first.
