Hey everyone, I just pulled the ol' 95 Yamaha FZR 600 out of the shed today and need some help. The battery has been on a trickle charger for a while, holds a charge just fine, but when I installed it this afternoon, all i got was clicking from the starter when i hit the starter button. The engine didn't turn over at all.

I don't know the in's-and-out's of starters, but is this a common issue? I assume the clicking means that it's working, but theres a disconnect somewhere between the starter and the engine.

If anyone can shed some light on this I would be very appreciative. Thanks everyone.

the clicking sound usually comes from the starter solenoid... if that's the case then it's because the voltage coming from the battery isn't quite enough to keep the solenoid fully engaged.... ie - weak battery.

the bike i bought did the same thing when the owner tried to start it after a winter in the shed. overnight with a battery charger will probably make the battery do ok for a while, but i found the bike works a lot better with a new battery.

Take the connections off the battery (negative first), clean them really well with steel wool, sand paper, etc., and reconnect them. It sounds like they may not have a good electrical connection.

How old is the battery? I'd bet Pete is right.
An old beat battery no matter how long you charge it
not gonna perform for you.

Jump start it from your car. If it works its definitely your battery.

It's the battery. It's not 'really' holding a charge...

If a battery takes a charge from a trickle charger but turns the starter over for a few seconds or gives you just one click and then goes dead it's usually bad cells.

If all you can get on multiple attempts is a click out of the solenoid it’s likely the connections.

just dont have the car running... or you can just have the battery charger/tender hooked up and turn it over.

my vote is also for a bad battery. how old is it?

Pull the battery from the bike and check it for fluid. Some cells may be low, top up with deionized water only.
If you have to add fluid put it on a slow charge for 12 hours, clean terminals as mentioned and re-instal.
