Question

license plate light instal?

1984 Ninja 900
Bike has long ago lost it's white plate light.
Will be getting a VT inspection in a few weeks and for the trouble I am going to install one.

It has 2 wires. I imagine one would be ground and the other to 12v?
I'll splice one into the 12v leading to the taillights and the other ground and I should be good to go?

Thanks

Is the tail light close enough that if you drilled some holes in the bottom of it, it would cast light on the plate? I've done that before and it worked fine. Just drill the holes close to where the bulbs are and it should get a decent amount of light on the plate. If that's not an option I'm clueless when it comes to electrical.

you got it on the nose. i wouldnt worry too much about the wiring though (as long as u got a 12v and gnd). splicing the wires and miswiring the plate bulb wont hurt much, in fact, the bulb will prolly still work, the current will just be going the wrong direction through the bulb. again, not a big issue.

if your plate is close enough i would try to bum light off the taillight though. you can dremel out a section to cast light on the plate then epoxy a piece of clear plastic from a CD case over the hole to keep the water out. works like a charm unless the plate is set too far back or the lights are weird shapes.

The idea for holes in the t-light might actually work.

I'll get back to you on that one.

Re: license plate light instal?

With a test light it is easy enough to figure out which is the 12V and which is the ground. If you go with an incandescent bulb - it really won't matter, but if you go with an LED like this one:
TARGA LED LICENSE PLATE LIGHT - WHITE LED - Targa

you need to have the current going in the right direction. Simple enough to do - if you're in the Waterbury area shoot me a PM, and I'll help you out. Good luck

I went with this:

Horizontal License Plate Frame :: Fender Elim Kits :: Honda 919 :: Honda :: Manufacturers :: McCoy Motorsports

Just as a heads up, the frame that I linked is out of stock at tobefast.com. There are a bunch on eBay though.
