How long will my Dragon Supercorsa Pros last?

Hi Folks,

At Tony's suggestion I have these on my SV650S and I really like them. My current lap times are about 1:27-1:29 and I have 3 days on them so far plus riding to NHMS from Cambridge and back. They look ok but I knom from higher performance car tires how heat cycles can kill some of the sticky ones well before the tread is worn off.

120/70ZR17 Dragon Supercorsa Pro (SC1 - Super Soft)
160/60ZR17 Dragon Supercorsa Pro (SC2 - Soft)

I am asking as I am not using all of the tire yet in terms of grip or lean angle except possibly when I practice my braking and get the front "talking" (something I don't do to make quicker laps but rather for my own skill building). The concern is that I'm not knowledgable in how to handle a sliding motorcycle as I have only experienced very small amounts of spin-up under throttle in the rain thanks to smooth and slow throttle application. I would like to know when to expect these to change or if I can run them until the rubber is nearly gone with almost the same grip.

Dave

Re: How long will my Dragon Supercorsa Pros last?

I'm running the same tires...

I have one trackday ... and Renee has 2.

Mine are still feeling great.

I'm thinking they are good for 3-4 days at Blue Group speeds.... but will know for sure after July dates.

FWIW, I change tires when I feel regular slippage where I don't normally get it.

I prefer to spend $300 on new tires... than much more on bodywork and hospital bills.

Me or Dave?

As for me, I haven't run the new Dragon Supercorsa's in the rain yet... looking forward to comparing them to the PPRaces.

I've put about 10 track days & a couple thousand street miles on a set of supercorsa pro's before they finally needed replacing.

Don't even bother thinking about heat cycles.

Re: How long will my Dragon Supercorsa Pros last?

dave when you saw my tires thay had about 4300 street miles. i'd expect to get about 6500 street & track before the tread is gone. i did that one trackday in the rain on them. yes they were terrifying, but i didn't go down, nor was i the slowest one out there lol. they're no biggie on the street in the rain. they were absolutely amazing on the 2nd and 3rd. I felt grip from them that i've never come close to on the street. I too have been wondering about head cycles on them. thought about tire warmers. they always felt up to temp going into turn 1 after the pit-out, but I was thinking more to preserve the life of the tires, rather than it being an issue of getting up to temp. but i dunno wtf i'm taling about and those are just one more thing i don't have money for right now lol.

all in all I love these tires and I'll be getting them again the second tme around. I just wish they didn't square so easily off from all the street riding i've been doing.

edit: oh just read pete's comment about the heat cycles.

Re: How long will my Dragon Supercorsa Pros last?

FWIW... I replace my tires long before the tread is gone.

I go strictly by feel. I start paying close attention after 3 trackdays.

As mentioned though, I am looking for maximum grip and would rather replace tires one trackday too early... than one too late.

PS... sometimes I'll back the pace down and practice getting comfy with the slides after the tires start to go away ... but more often than not, I replace the tires once they get fairly "loose".

10 days!?

These things are compairable to Power 2cts as far as wear, arent they? I was thinking 3, maybe 4 days out of those even at my slow pace?

so without warmers start paying attention after 3 trackdays or so.

how about with warmers on between sessions of each trackday?

significant difference you think?

I've noticed a slight difference since I started using warmers this year, but I still go through the tires just as fast.

I typically run some take offs from the AMA Superbike series for my street rains unless MotoGP takeoffs are available at the time I need new rains for touring.

Doesn't everyone?

I don't think warmers are going to affect your tire life enough to worry.

And those of you getting 10+ days on the track out of tires... you're lucky or crazy.

You're not seeing significant degradation in grip? Or you don't care?

I think the fact that I swap rubber after 3 to 4 trackdays is another reason I've never had a trackday "incident".

too much working for me this weekend. Makes me grumpy.

But, seriously, aren't those race tires? I really am not sure. If they are, it would seem that they would be scary in the rain.

I ran Michelin Power Races in the rain. The first two laps were scary, but after that they were fine.

I'm hoping the Dragon Supercorsas are better... I've heard they are.

Then again, I'm really hoping to find a front wheel for an 07/08 CBR600rr so I can throw some rain tires on the wheels. (I have the rear already)

Speaking of which... anyone with an 03-06 CBR600rr need a front wheel... complete with rotors, etc?

cool. I hear great stuff about the pirelli's...I think they are amazing. Someone told me they are the best tire for new racers because they tend to give up gradually, rather than suddenly ("tires for race retards" was actually the quote) That is the reason I use them for race/track days.

but those tires on the street in the rain?

I thought you were joking in a sarcastic way... so I ran with it. Hope I didn't make you grumpier!

I think mine are like DOT legal "R Compound" car tires. Something like a Falken Azenis R615 or some such... maybe a Toyo RA1 but they don't seem that sticky (those sandblast my car even before they warm up). The Diablo Supercorsa seem to be the most pure track tire of the bunch Tony sells and don't even have sipign in the center of the tire. If you look at the siping on my Dragon Supercorsa Pro tires you will see there is quite a lot of it except on the very edge of the tire (where I am NOT going in the rain).

Diablo Supercorsa:

Dragon Supercorsa Pro:
Dragon Supercorsa Pro

This bike was purchased for track fun and learning, I won't use it for much else as my RT does everything pretty well and most things superbly well. It is actually so good that it goes CAAA CHING if it hits the ground and actually uses satellite to call the dealer and tell them how many thousands I am about to come over and spend.... thus the SV despite my plan to not let it hit the ground.

If you're gonna do a lot of street, I'd go with the Corsa III's first (but I only have 120/180 sizes so nothing for SV's.
Diablo Corsa III

Ken is running these tires and goes quite well.

They will give you some more life... at the expense of some grip.

The dragon supercorsa's feel really good on the track... but can't say I've used them on the street. I will say they seem to warm up faster than most race tires I've used.

No, I was just saying I didn't mean to be an asshole. I was just suprised to see someone actually running race DOT on the street (even though they are "DOT").

Re: How long will my Dragon Supercorsa Pros last?

No worries, I didn't even know they were that extreme. I rode 15 miles in the rain on the way home from the last event and they seemed fine... but the only thing I pushed was the rear brake to feel for how much grip I had. I could feel them start to shudder and then break loose and the grip level felt respectable. It was still pretty warm though, close to 70F if I had to guess.

Re: How long will my Dragon Supercorsa Pros last?

I swap to my street tires (Qualifiers atm) for street use 1. to have longer life out of my pirelli's at track 2. I wouldn't want to use them in the rain because the tread doesn't cover the edges of the tires. Other than that, these dragon pro's are amazing and for dry street riding they would be fine I think, especially in the recent heat. So far no slipping and 2 trackdays on them so far.

Re: How long will my Dragon Supercorsa Pros last?

I think Pete's post (10 trackdays)reflects the fact that he's riding a slow, moderately light bike.

A 600 will toast tires more quickly due to it's heavier weight and higher HP. 4 trackdays seems reasonable almost regardless of street miles (unless they square off really badly).

An SV could easliy go more than that. One season. Unless your times are dipping into the <1:20 range you're not heating them enough to cause performance to tail off due to heat cycles.

damn i'm going to need a new set of these soon in think

I've done 3 trackdays on them (one in the rain), and they were pretty squared off from all the street miles. I did a good job un-squaring them at the past two trackdays, but if I keep riding on the street until then they'll be just as bad again. I had scrubbed them close to the edge, but who really rides the edge for long on the street?

this has got me pretty torn because i like the long sunday rides to NH and VT, but these tires felt absolutely amazing on 6/2 and 6/3 and i'm not going to give up that grip. guess I should start saving my pennies...

So a 600 with a fat guy on it means 3, maybe 4 days then..

The "new Pirelli Dragon Supercorsa Pro's" are not race tires they are street tires.

The SC1-SC2 ect. Are Race tires. Triumph doe not put race tires on the bike.
