Can someone help me fit race plastics ??

It's time for me to fit my new ArmourBodies track plastics on the r6... I've never done it before and I want to be real careful drilling all the holes, cutting the slider holes, etc etc.

Does anyone with some experience doing this want to come by some time this week asap and help me do it? I'll provide food and beers/sodas as well as my appreciation.

Also... I've got the Dzus fasteners and a 2" hole saw for the frame sliders... do I need anything else?

Did I tell you how happy I was when Pete told me you were doing the bodywork yourself? I had your bike on the lift, all the parts laid out and I was pulling my tool box over when he gave me the good news

Oh ya. Get a uni bit for drilling. Its much easier.

get some duct tape. tape both sides of the lower fairing where you plan on drilling your frame slider holes. this should stop splintering of the fiberglass

Yeah... I want to learn these things so I can always do them myself in the future... I'm sure I'm capable of doing it myself... but I just want to do a good job and someone who knows what they're doing to lend a hand this first time I do it would be nice.

Uni bit?

Also clamps to hold the bodywork together so you get holes in the same spot for the dzus fasteners. A pencil or marker. The tape is a good idea but if youre getting the stuff painted you really wont need it. Who ever paints it will clean it up for you if it needs it. I didnt have a problem with it splintering.

Hmmm why would you need different sized bits? All the Dzus fasteners will require the same size hole, no?

I have lots of clamps...

Up at the fairing stay did you just drill two holes on each mirror spot and use zip ties or what?

I'm anal/ocd and want it to be perfect...

edit: btw bike and everything are in Wayland, MA... not in the city.

Dzus fasteners hold to bodywork together not to the bike. Youll need to drill the fender, part of the tail, and some of the upper to mount it to the bike. You will also need to drill for the windscreen and for the spot the mirrors went that are held with zip ties. Feel free to come by the during the week to see what I did with mine.

Re: Can someone help me fit race plastics ??

Not sure what Catch was refering to.
The link requires a user id. Well here's a tip for the sliders.

get some silly putty
put the bolt for slider into the engine mount hole
or where ever it goes... then put the silly putty where the slider
will go through on the inside of the body work. then fit the body work on
and tap the bolt into the putty when are at the right position.
Now you got an impression of the center mark.

Re: Can someone help me fit race plastics ??

I had to do that for a buddies 600rr, the tricky part was the inside of his fairing has insulation/foam on it. I used the bolts supplied for sliders at first, with some touch-up paint (or white out whatever you have lying around) to make the center mark. The step is good as you need to make so many holes in other things. I do have a portable drill press for straight drilling if you need to borrow, just pm me. I did a pilot hole from inside out, and then used the hole saw for the outside in. It may not matter as you will get it painted, but you do carpentry and should always cut from finished side to hidden side so tearout goes away/at a minimum. If you forget that, when you are not working on something that will get refinished, you won't be happy. Masking tape on out side helps out greatly.

For the side with alot of insulation, a buddy recommended getting a dowel that fits into bolt hole snug. Take bolt to lowes and get one cheap, or you may have one in the house. Cut it to length, and sharpen like a spike, set in place then push fairing onto it. The indent hole will act as pilot mark.

here is 600RR, came out great first try. Have tools and wagon, live in W Rox, you need a hand pm me we can carpool to your bike if needed. (never have done this for the other race stuff you mentioned)
