SPEED LIMITS: For Our Safety, OR For Their Profit?I learned long ago, that speed limits exist for maybe 20% safety reasons, 80% revenue generation. believe it or not, many people can safely operate their vehicles well beyond the posted speed limit regardless of what THE MAN tells us..... ![]() |

SPEED LIMITS: For Our Safety, OR For Their Profit?75% revenue 20% safety 5% environmentalism - they enacted the 55mph speed limit partially for environmental reasons - but cars at 75mph get better gas mileage than trucks at 55mph so this is not really a good reason. Ben |

SPEED LIMITS: For Our Safety, OR For Their Profit?Right, 55 here was for fuel consumption in the 1970s We know it is not safety because you can ride down I95 and it goes from 65 to 55 as the states change from Connecticut to New York. So are the roads in Connecticut softer or something? No each state can change the limit. One of the safest roads in the world is the Autobahn. It has not speed limit for the most part (until you get near cities and then it is like any other road here) but it is really safe. Two reasons. 1. It is hard to get a license in Europe. When I moved here, I handed the lady at public safety my Virgin Island's license and she laughed at me and said I have to take the tests. A one armed blind retarded monkey could pass the written and driving tests in the states. In the Virgin Islands, we have an Essay exam, you have to wait till the next day so they can grade it and the driving test is way more comprehensive and is administered by the Guard. 2. They obey driving rules. Not speeding it is not a rule. I mean the courtesy rules. Like indicating for a turn or lane change and keeping as far right as posible (or left if the traffic patern is reversed) OK I am done |

Actually, when the speed goes down, it's usaully in either heavily populated areas, or where the road has 'dangerous curves'.. I know in RI that in cities, not towns the limit is 55 on 95, but once you hit the town limits of east greenwich it goes up to 65... |

SPEED LIMITS: For Our Safety, OR For Their Profit?I think the best example of revenue winning out over safety is the choices towns make for where it is legal and illegal to pass, not the speed limits they choose. All over the place you will recognize safe places to pass and the town has put up a "no passing sign". Then you come along an uphill curving dotted yellow line where barely any cars are going to have enough power to safely pass, and there is no way to tell if another car is coming around the corner. I pretty much agree with most in town speed limits... I just usually have an issue on state numbered routes and super highways. |
