If they're the same, why call 'em two different things? I called the particular person I was 'discussing' this with a Christian a number of times, and he kept insisting he was Protestant...

Christians are people who believe in the birth of Jesus as the son of god, and his resurrection after death. The original followers of this belief became what is now known as the roman catholic church.

Martin Luther disagreed with certain practices of the church, but not the core belief system (christianity). His "protest" of these practices led to the creation of Lutheranism, the first protestant sect. Other people followed his lead and either disagreed with Luther (Calvinists) or other portions of the catholic church (Methodists, Episcopalians, etc) and led to the modern mix of protestant religions that we have today. But they're all of them, including catholicism, "christian" religions because their core beliefs center around the birth and resurection of Jesus Christ.

Then there's the Anglicans, who's major protest was that the pope wouldn't allow the king of england to get a divorce, I guess they're technically protestants too.

So, in summary. All protestants are christian. Not all christians are protestant.

episcopalian == anglican
and mormons are mutant cult-members who are not christian, regardless of the references to jesus all over the place

Nah didn't search for it. We learned this stuff in sunday school

As well a good bit in confirmation class. Their reasoning being, "before you decide to join our church, you should probably know what else is out there". Seemed reasonable.

On the episcopalian/angle thing, should have know that. Their services are so...catholish.

the full liturgy without transubstantiation and all that Mary crap.

Oh, yeah, and the priests can marry, and you can have a female deacon.

Well the clergy-sex sounds cool, but I don't know about cutting out that weekly dose of vitamin J. That's how catholics derive their heathen-crushing superpowers!
