Living in a one room apartment would still be way better than being crowded up in piles in that astrodome with a bunch of strangers stinking, farting, coughing, and shitting all over the floors. Poor or rich, no one deserves to be in that kind of situation. "good enough for the poor..." yeah right. Bitch.

It's not even that Bush has done a sh*tty job, yes many people in the Federal government fucked up REALLY badly but it is more a question of attitude IMO.

When Bush got on TV he just did not seem believable and comforting. The country is hurting and he did not seem very compassionate, it was hard for me to believe he actually cared, and it got really hard for me to not believe the people playing race cards.

E.x. As stupid as it was I have to admire Kanye West for having the balls to say what he said on TV.

Not saying it is Bush's fault but it is totally pathetic that our country can kill anyone anywhere in the World in a matter of minutes but we couldn't do more to help people down in the hurricane zone.

New Orleans International airport never flooded. The government could have sent in a crack team in 24 hours and got the airport running again, and then landed a squadron of military C-5 Galaxies full of food and medical supplies IF they really wanted too. (Each plane could carry over 135 tons of emergency supplies) For some reason they didn't. Instead we got to hear police and firefighters complaining that food, water, and medical supplies were pouring in from volunteers, the red cross, and private organizations but the government effort was slow.

It does amaze me that people had to suffer for so long before getting any help. US is suppose to be the strongest, most powerful country, right? So why is it that they can't even help their OWN PEOPLE in time of real need, but they are so much in a hurry to always spend money, time, troops, etc. in other countries? Something is wrong with that picture.

I have to agree. I was watching Kanye live and had to stop and think.."did I actually hear what I thought I heard?" Good for him for being honest.

ya but he sounded like an idiot imo..like another dumbass celebrity... imo it was a combination of reasons for the inaction... if anything it was a class thing not a race thing...

this must be fresh off the dem talking points..i heard this from someone yesterday too.. that is just patisan political BS that got us into this mess in the first place...you know it took mre then 5 days to mobilize the troops in Iraq and afganistan...

what people fail to recognize in this issue is that they federal gov't cant step in until the state asks them... W wanted to evacuate and send troops but the govener said no...then didnt know what to do until it was too late...

I'm not saying the federal gov't gets a pass...but let's put things into perspective...

Come on... the federal government steps all over the states rights when it wants to.

Like say making sure people in CA can't use a certain "herb" with a doctors permission not to mention thousands of other things.

Yah it took more then 5 days to get into Iraq, but that was what? 50,000 people or more?

This didn't need to be anywhere near that big. I could swear the air force claims it can set up a temporarly air base anywhere in the world in 48 hours, we do have the manpower and equipment to have gotten a massive amount of support in there in 1/2 the time we did if we actually wanted to.

Glad my donation to the Red Cross will be tax deductible since the government obviously wouldn't have used it for anything useful.

BTW you just can't blame the people down in NO for any of this, that is BS. Yah some of them are total idiots and ignored the call to evacuate but some of them just couldn't and once they are all stuck there in a disaster you can't point fingers at them. That's like EMTs ignoring an injured motorcyclist cause he was obviously an idiot for riding a motorcycle.

i dont agree with that...but that is different...

Bottom line is the everyone across the board messed up...starting with the local gov, to the state gov and ending with the fed. Because at the end of the day they are suppose dto be in control...... And it wasnt for a lack of effort imo but beuarcracy and partisan political bs

I never said anything about the people in NO being stupid...80% evacuated..thats huge. The only ones that stayed were the poor, disabled, elderly and unfortunately criminals....

BUt I have no sympathy for the idiots staying behind now thats for sure...

Local and State say they filed for State of Emergency 2 days prior to the storm.

Feds say the e-mail never went through and was never asked.

Everyone points fingers. No one wants to take blame for anything. How about the idiots that didn't leave when asked. People in this country need to take responsibility for their own actions. It's always so easy to point fingers... especially at the Government. It's funny.... assholes if they do, assholes if they don't.

PEOPLE ARE F U C K E D!

hey, I'll take a Nor'easter.

To put this thread back on topic....

concerning Barbara Bush's comment: a few years ago I spent the better part of a week in N.O. for a dive convention (it was held at the convention center that became a living hell after the flood). Anyway, on the day I was supposed to leave I was bumped from my flight at the airport and had to take a bus back downtown to my hotel. I made the mistake of jumping on the wrong bus. Well I got one hell of a tour through the poorest sections of NO. I'm gonna go out on a limb here and state that NONE of you have ever been to such a place. Boyz in the Hood looks like paradise compared to this. I really can't imagine 20ft of water would really make it worse. Most of the homes seemed that they would be half-way decent if the occupants had any pride or motivation. Garbage piled high on porches, spilling down stairs and all over the front 'lawn' was pretty much the standard condition. People dazed wandering and loitering everywhere obviously on drugs or alcohol. It was a scene out of a movie. You should have seen the glares I got on the bus! Skinny white kid in a coat and tie, just beggin' to be mugged! I was actually very frightened, and justifibly so! Anyway, my point is that the conditions many of the 'refugees' lived in prior to the flood were absolutely horrific! This could mean a new start for some of them if they put some effort into overcoming this instead of the gov't doing everything for them. Christ, they're getting three hots and a cot! I'm sure that's way more than many of them are used to. And now, to boot, the Feds are giving them debit cards worth $2000 apiece! (that alone is probably a very bad idea).

In short, I agree with Barbara. Do you have any idea how much $$ her and her husband have raised for the tsunami victims? (and Bill too!) and now they're doing this for the flood victims. Do you really think she just looks down on these people? Why is she trying to help them? They don't have to be there doing this. And now you've got NPR and the dem partisian machine down there spinning this to no end. Shameful.

I was all set to send a $100 donation to the red cross for hurricane relief from my business. Not anymore. I've had enough of the race theme. These people won't see one red-fucking-cent of mine! Actually that's not true, the Feds are going to EXTORT the money out of me. If they want relief they can go pound on the door of Howard Dean and John Kerry.

So it was OK with you that he went of live television stating that the National Guard was going down to shoot black people? Do you have any idea what this kind of statement incites?!

Think about it.

I don't blame them, I blame their local leaders for not caring for them in the first place.

BTW, did anyone hear Nagin's comments regarding meeting with Blanco and Bush? Bush was all set to intervene and begin operations, all he needed was the governor to sign off on it. She said she needed 24hours to think about it.

He (Nagin) was struck, he said he couldn't believe it. This is not something I read, I heard his comments on the radio, and not just a two-line sound bite either.

Dude. No.

No matter how bad you might think New Orleans slums are, they *do not* have it better being crowded into a stadium.

And in terms of a democratic "spin", lets just say Bush made this one pretty easy, the spin machine is reting peacefully.

I don't agree at all. No way. These people are about to be thrust into programs (if they want to) that could help them achieve a higher standard of living. I'm not talking about the superdome situation, btw. The people in Texas are not that bad off where they are right now. In fact, alot of them are saying how great being in Texas is and now many wish to move there.

And you can't seriously think the dems aren't going overboard on this. Look at Dean for cryin' out loud! Actually, I love that guy! He prolly converts more democrats to republicans than you can imagine.

bentbryan... you are a complete jerk. LOL!! How can you seriously sit there and say they're better off now when they're basically living one step from a concentration camp? Dude... they have NOTHING NOW! No food, no housing, no security, half of the people prolly lost family members, friends, jobs, they lost their whole LIFE... everything they've ever had .... GONE!! You think they're better off just starting over? And how do you think these people are going to "raise their standard of living"? Seriously, how is that going to "just happen"? With a freshly built home and a $2,000 credit card? You can take the man out of the ghetto but you can't take the ghetto out of the man. 10 years from now, everything will be the same. It will be poverty with 10 year old paint, instead of 30 year old paint.

What really makes me sick.... some people actually think this natural catastrophe is a good thing and is needed to "whip a slate clean". This is a temporary speed bump in a less fortunate society. Proper Government support, like a booming economy, is the only thing that will change shit like this. We need to create domestic jobs and opportunities for Americans. Jobs, Education, and Opportunities are the only things that make sense for helping these people get themselves out of poverty.

While I too have trouble understanding what goes on in Bryan's head, he's not a jerk.

I think some folks see it as an opportunity, which in some ways I suppose it is or will be. But if you lived there, you wouldn't think that. Barbara Bush is sleeping on a cushy mattress in a climate controlled mansion right now, so that sort of thought comes easily to her. She'd feel differently if some stranger was taking a dump on the floor of a stadium she was living in while five feet away from her.

Just my two cents.

Nope... i got your message. You agreed with Barbara's comments. You feel their (reps) extra effort is a positive one. You've personally visited NO and it was a complete hell (IYO). After everything is done, the area will be better.

Nothing went over my head.... you just see (like Barb) the diamond in the rough. IMO, there is no diamond in this coal mine.... just coal.

Oh, and I was being sarcastic about the jerk comment. I don't typically insult people when I make my point. If you found it offensive, I apologize.
