, wearing seat belts "might" lower the medical bills in an accident, or might raise tham, if you die, there should only be a funeral bill and medical insurance doesn't cover that.
I really fail to see any connection between seatbelt use and medical costs that would be consistent

seat belt laws are government imposing it's POWER over individuals plain & simple.

i thought the health costs is related to car accident only with respect to the seatbelt. in this case it's probly better off being dead?

if a bus driver doesn't wear seat and only wears clean shorts and he hits you, he probly wouldn't even notice anything. but you would be dead.

Personally I'd feel much safer on the roads if they didnt allow women or anyone over 65 years old drive their cars.

I wear my seatbelt because with an airbag I feel that I am safer in an accident with my seatbelt on, should the airbag deploy, rather than if I was not wearing my seatbelt.

If someone has reason to think that this isnt true then please enlighten me but by looking at my cars owners manual it looks like they are saying that no seatbelt+deployed airbag in accident= serious injuries.

But I feel that wearing a seatbelt should be a matter of personal choice. Like many things that we do (drugs, alcohol, etc.) our government feels the need to mandate what we can and can not do in fear that we aren't intelligent enough to make our own decisions in these matters.

but when I turn 102 I am going to drive to the statehouse and testify that people over 65 should not drive

Im only 23 and I already drive like an old woman. Tickets are expensive, I cant afford to pay for those things.

i think im about to say something extremly stupid here... but..... i think i understand what Ben is saying. bikes dont come with helmets but cars come with belts so thats the difference between a helmet law and a seatbelt law. right?


im kind of a hypocrite.. i think people who dont wear helmets are dumb but i dont wear a seatbelt 95% of the time. should i be forced to? i dont know. i think states that have a belt law but no helmet law are stupid. i like NH laws where "you have to wear it until your old enough to make you own decisions" out look on it.

Cali has been doining the pull you over for no belt thing forever so its only a matter of time before we are all there... just like restaurants and smoking...

No, I believe it's a parents decision if their child should or should not wear a setbelt, helmet or other safety devise, and not the state's

I'm from a country where both seat-belts and helmets are mandatory... 3 points (out of 12) and a $150 fine if you don't comply.

I think they are good rules -- sure, you lose a degree of personal freedom, but IMNSHO you're as big an idiot if you don't wear a seat-belt in a car as if you don't wear a helmet on a bike.

And hey, if you don't want to wear either one, that's fine -- but kindly don't go to a public hospital to be treated (if you're not dead already) if you have an accident, thanks!

I have never seen a single study ever ever ever that says that seat-belts don't save lives and helmets don't save lives. Just wear one FFS!

i agree with Brian. this used to be the land of the free. i dont need some govt blow hards telling me how to be safe.

its a money maker plain and simple. the insurance lobby/govt hacks sell it to the public by saying they will lower rates. they never do.

i can vouch that my seatbelt has saved my life. i was hit head on in an 85 saab with no airbags. the force was so great that the seat belt broke my collarbone and i had a rasberry across my chest and stomach...but i'm alive because of it...

I only wear my seatbelt if I have been drinking to much and can't stay upright in the drivers seat. It sucks when you take a left and fall into the passenger seat.
