Immigration crackdown intensifies


Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio has mobilized a posse of some 1500 privite citizens to seek out and arrest undocumented immigrants for conspiracy to smuggle themselves into the United States.The efforts come on the heels of an anti-human-smuggling statute that took effect in Arizona in August and gave prosecutors a tool to go after "coyotes," or smugglers, who traffic in undocumented immigrants. The Maricopa County Attorney's Office later issued an opinion saying undocumented immigrants suspected of paying coyotes could be prosecuted as conspirators.

On Wednesday night, Arpaio's posse fanned out across the desert, looking for illegal immigrants being smuggled on state highways and local roadways. In the past six weeks, Arpaio's operation has jailed 246 undocumented immigrants, including 12 smugglers.

Arpaio said Wednesday that he hoped his agency's efforts would be a deterrent, with illegal immigrants and smugglers realizing they're going to jail, this is a felony in this state and I will uphold the law,no if and or buts about it, you come here illegally and you will go to jail period.

"They have to get the message and stop coming over here," Arpaio said. "Do it legally."


Man you got to love this guy he's the same sheriff that keeps the inmates in the Maricopa county jail in pink uniforms and in tents in the middle of the desert.

WOW. i lived there for 8 years and this the first thing that he has done that i kinda approve of. lets see where this goes. i suspect nothing good will come of this. before we now it these stops/arrests will end in gunfire

I lived there to.What didn't you approve of I think everything he has done is great.

It's about time someone showed some courage on the illegal immigration issue. The politicians are so paralyzed with fear that they have done nothing and now citizens and local governments are taking charge.

what all jails should be. why the fuck do we give convicted felons weightlifting equipment in the first place? so they can really kick more ass?! we should give them buckets of lard to eat and ciggarette's.

They have a link right to the Mexican government website where they try to list out where the patrols will be.

I've seen a TV show on this sheriff... I actually think it's pretty cool, jail is not supposed to be a hotel for convicts.

I am outraged that our government is offering this information to the Mexican government. Essentially, the U.S. governement is jeopardizing our national security by pointing out weak links along our southern border. So, not only do the immigrants know where they can ILLEGALLY cross the border into the U.S. but terrorists can use that same information to get in and smuggle whatever they need.

Yah I wish google was properly translating the page.. for me about halfway down it switches to spanish.

I should be able to read spanish, but alas all that knowledge dribbled out of my ear over the years while I was sleeping. Not my strong subject.

The whole issue is so ridiculously out of control. We even had some people marching in our office complex (Burlington, MA).

i can agree with most of that. the jail is over-overcrowded.. actually has 3X's the people it was designed to hold. i have no problem with people doing time for real crimes. but being in tent city and on the chain gang for having a joint on you seems excessive. its funny... when you talk to most people down there they all claim to hate him... but he gets reelected every time

I didn't know people were in the tents for smoking a joint. I thought that it was for the more serious criminals.

Its true most people say they don't like him but they keep voting him in, 13 years now.

he pulls some shady stuff on side too. ive read about him using an old jail in mesa for "important" people in society. for the right "donation" to his election campaign you might get to stay at the mesa "hilton" where you get to have a cell phone, come and go as you please, get real food or bring your own... but shhhhh joe dont want you to know

I know!

In my area, I don't believe there are too many illegals working in landscaping....yet.
But I've seen a few crews that I doubt have visas.
