Teddy Said it almost 100 yrs.ago

Theodore Roosevelt's ideas on Immigrants and being an AMERICAN in 1907.
"In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here
in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be
treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to
discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or
origin. But this is predicated upon the person's becoming in every facet an
American, and nothing but an American...There can be no divided allegiance
here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn't
an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag...
We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language...
and we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the
American people."
- Theodore Roosevelt 1907

Why don't you guys actually look a few things up before you spout off a load of crap about how easy it is to become an american citizen, and how you don't have to renounce your own country of birth and how you don't have to speak english?

ALL of Roosevelt's ideals are a REQUIREMENT for naturalization in this country.

You all just ASSUME they aren't because you are pig ignorant of your own countries' laws.

Read this pages 26-28 specifically. you might learn something. Particularly, you might learn that if all Americans had to apply for citizenship, many would likely fail (drug arrests, DUI, prison record, communism/nazi party membership, firearms offenses, prostitution etc etc are ALL reasons for denying US citizenship and/or revoking it at a later date).

I KNOW I'm going to get flamed for this, but whatever. I am just sick and tired of the ignorance and misunderstanding about immigration, and the "Let's build a big wall to keep the unwashed out" mentality of many of this country's 'citizens'

derek

It is my understanding that legally immigrating to this country is extremely difficult. Can't say that I really know the laws...but I do KNOW that if you're an ILLEGAL you bascially have more 'rights' than the average citizen. Or maybe it's more along the line that you don't have to obey the laws.

No Degs, you're right. I know very little about becoming an American citizen. I DO know (thanks to you & Mick) how difficult it is to LEGALLY become one though if you're not born in this country...

However, being born in the United States by parents who were born in the United States gives me the unalienable right to sell drugs, drive under the influence, go to prison, join the communist/nazi party, violate firearms laws, and hire a prostitute...

i am getting sick and tired of people from other countries telling me how us should run ours...if you can't follow the rules stay in your own country...it's pretty simple. I understand the system that controls immigration is broken and needs to be fixed...but that is not an excuse to open the floodgates and let everyone in...

I am also sick and tired of people talking about illegal immigrants and immigrants in the same sentence...they are not the same. If you went through the system and gained citizenship throught the system you should be more pissed at what is going on then anyone....

No one in this country is against immmigration....it is illegal immigration we have a problem with.....we as Americans have the right to control who comes into this country and who doesn't....

There are all kinds of things that make it hard..

My co-worker is 27, he has been here since he's 3. His parents came over from Cambodia when being alive was going out of style. He has been trying his whole life to get citizenship but hasn't been able to since he has no birth certificate. So he remains in "political asylum" indefinitely. The twit at immigration also decided to "give" him a different name when he got off the boat too. "My name is X". "Oh well, welcome to the US, I think instead we will call you Y, cause I feel like it!" So he constantly deals with that too.

Of course he is otherwise 100% assimilated but it seems like everyone on the legal track has some crazy story about how the government has made their life miserable.

I hear a lot of that...it's a damn shame. This is almost as big of a problem as border security...both need to be fixed....and soon

If you are here illegally... get out.

If you want to become a citizen, become one.

Nothing in life is easy. Who said it was? And why should this be any different? If you ask me, it's a big "FUCK YOU" to all those immigrants who've dedicated a large portion of their own money and lives to become an American. If you want your family / bloodline to reside in the US, someone has to make it happen, so start now. NO ONE gets a handout.... and screw anyone who thinks they deserve to be an American.

I tell you, that's the problem with most people these days... they all think they deserve something. NO ONE DESERVES A DAMN THING!! If you want it, you work for it.

Expect Nothing and Appreciate Everything.

Brian

You could have been born a Mexican if someone in your bloodline didn't have good enough sense to travel another couple miles North.... giving you the gift to be born an American.

...Kill most of the people living their, infect the rest with plague, displace them from their homes, and set up shop on their land?

Yeah, I'm proud of that too. And I would happily do my part to massacre the indigineous population so that my Anglo bloodlines could thrive, if only their were some indigineous people left to kill. Maybe we could substitute Mexicans? They look kinda similar.

Are you suggesting the indigineous population(s) were peaceful ones?
