When are the schools & parents going to get with the program and make the kids go outside and run around like kids again.

Then they can eat Fluff once in a while... not every day, but once in a while. Just like Pizza, Soda, Cookies, Candy, etc...

Here's to a world of not knowing how the hell to balance the shit in with a healthy diet. Look at me: drinking soda with tequila in it, eating pizza and fucking happy and healthy. Whatever happened to limiting TV time, video games, computers..... This is an issue that really pisses me off, I could go one for hours about how parents expect schools to raise thier kids for them and schools expect all kids to be taught at home......blah....

I'm sorry, but parents these days are pussies. What ever happened to a good old ruler across the ass, and getting the kids outside to run around, play in the woods, or gosh, even a sport or something after school. I see more and more little 12 year old wanna be gangster little kids around my area all the time, I just dont get it. When I was 12 we were out in the woods climbing trees and causing general mayhem, not heading straight home to talk on AOL and send text messages to my homies on my blackberry or palm pilot. Kids these days are just fucking stupid and lazy, period.

It's not the sugar that makes them fat, as benvfr said, it is the lazy bastards that sit around and play video games and watch tv and eat like crap or the fact that the parents may not be involved enough to get them outside to play or the fact that the parents are to ignorant and want to blame someone else for their problems of having overweight kids, (law suit against McD's for selling fat laden food) plain and simple as americans we can be lazy.

Well we are afraid of the coddled Child molesters

I am lucky the nearest child molester is over a mile from my house.

NO one just lets their kids run anymore. sad to say.

Because its rare the ones who do
no longer have the protection of the herd.

Give Jessica's law a few years to work and they will all be face down in the prison toilet where they belong.

Then the kids can come out and play

It's not like those sex offenders weren't there before.. people were just not aware they were there.

It's not that hard to let your kids play outside and keep watch on them.

It also helps to know all your neighbors. We always had limits on how far we were allowed to wander, generally it was to stay in the area of known neighbors.

Today of course neighborhoods are wacked, everyone stays in their house and doesn't even say "Hi". I only know one person on my street... I've helped people who locked themselves out of the house and they don't even have the decency to introduce themselves even after you introduce yourself.

I do think there are more then before

1st Population doubled and frankly % of good is down
2nd influence of Church Morals has declined greatly since WW2
3rd Lack of impulse control is viewed as an illness not evil
4th The law culture has tied the hands of the average Papa who in the passed probably could have shot and shoveled without anyone saying boo.
5th The lack or rigidity and TV/video on the kids probably makes it more likely they could be in an unsafe situation.

1) What makes you think the % of bad people has risen? Sounds like a knee jerk reaction because there are more "minorities" around.

2) Newsflash - church is a great source of child molestation

3) Agreed - and Ritalin also contributes to fat kids cause it knocks them out and slows metabolism - from watching my brother take it for years. It definitely helped him but it also messed him up in some ways. He doesn't need it anymore and is definitely way better off.

4) I don't know, if you shot someone back then you probably got in trouble too right?

5) Parental responsiblity - take the TV & Video away and you don't have to worry about the MTV influence - IMO kids should not have TVs and computers in their rooms. One TV in the house so parents maintain control, one computer in the house too most likely.

Here we go.....

How can a parent be truly involved if, in order to provide a safe home for their children, in a safe neighborhood, said parents have to work two jobs each? Homes are on the rise - in Concord the average price of a three bedroom house is roughly $300,000, yet the median family income is only $45,000/year for a 2-parent (which we all know is rare), 2-child household. Half the family income is spent on mortgage. And with interest rates on the rise, even a less expensive home costs more than it should per month. I was a latch-key kid growing up. Both my parents worked in schools over a half hour away from home, but I had a grandmother who lived down the street who was very involved and retired. (side note, I WALKED there) Social Security doesn't pay enough to live even remotely comfortably, so if you are lucky enough to have granparents around to help out, most of them are working during retirement anyway. Caregivers know that they are in high demand and can charge an arm and a leg for daycare or afterschool care, so they do, which in turn means mom and dad have to work EVEN MORE to afford for their kids to be taken care of. The poverty line has not increased in the same percentage as the cost of living, so even those who can't afford to live don't qualify for welfare. So, this in turn means fewer people without jobs which drives incomes down (less people are working so they don't have to pay as much to get people to come work for them. And, since no proud American is going to work for $5.15 an hour (minimum wage) these companies are hiring illegal immigrants to work, thus making more illegals in the country. And, because all the menial jobs are going to immigrants, we Americans need to go to school for longer and get more and more degrees in order to be qualified for a job that pays a living wage. BUT, in order to go to school, you need to take out tons of loans to afford it, since most colleges cost over $20,000 a year, 1 or 2 grand of which MIGHT be covered by scholarships if the kid is smart or talented enough (add that to the mortgage, cost of feeding and providing for two kids, and that puts quite a strain on the average $45,000/year household).....

Long story short, every "problem" in this country is not a stand-alone issue. Everything is linked in one way or another.

Whew.

Discuss.

my son hates fluff. he's skinny as hell. i love it had one for lunch yesterday. he wants to play outside all the time but we won't let him unsupervised because i trust no one. thats a tough deal because were busy doing stuff around the house and he wants to play. we limit his play station to 3 to 4 times a week no more than two hours in a day. motorcycle, atv games only he has plenty of mind strengthening toys to use. very little tv allowed also.

i remember being unger than him (6yo) and playing in the woods allday two or three miles from home. unless you live in the wilderness those days are over. we try to get him involved in sports and as many activities as possable to keep him active.

You do live out in the wilderness.

Not like here where I have 6 sex offenders in a one mile radius.

Not that it is an issue but I wouldn't want to raise kids where I live right now, in that sense I agree with most of you.

There are very few neighborhoods where I live that even have back yards big enough to play sports in.

I grew up in a more rural area and I do think that is the better place for kids.
