governement monitoring public phones?

I can't remember exactly where, but a few days ago I saw on a public phone a small sticker that said something like "this phone is being monitored by the government for security purposes" can't remember exactly the words on the sticker, but anyone have seen this before? I also read that in certain states, they might start monitoring driver's cell phones.

I hate to break it to you - they're already monitoring cell phone calls, they are also using triangulation from the cell towers to locate where you are (even if you aren't on the phone - just have it turned on) within a foot or so...

But are they monitoring cell phones conversations, or only movement/location? I was told about a year ago that if you were in an emergency situation and calling from your cell, the cops couldn't locate you...actually called 911 from my cell for a drunk driver being all over the interstate, and the call center told me the cops couldn't locate me, so I had to give them the number on one of the miles markers on the side of the road. So now if they can, that's a good thing.

But if they actually can monitor conversations, that's another story...what about privacy? Then what will come next...

V the local police and 911 can't do it but the Federal government (NSA) can and is.

Not only can they monitor everything but they're recording huge amounts of it and saving it.

They have access to all of our financial data too. If you come up suspicious in any way they can go back and retrieve & listen to all your phone calls and find out anything you bought with a debit card, credit card, etc..

A lot of this is new since 9/11. There are some good books that go over how it all happened.

that's why they catalogue it and focus in on "people of interest". So every phone call gets recorded, they only truly monitor red flagged people

Well obviously, they don't have time to waste listening to any conversations of no interest to them. No big deal really...I guess it's just the weird feeling that if they want to, they can...

Anyone with a little knowledge of electronics can modify a scanner to listen to cell and cordless phone conversations.

They are, that isn't the question. The question is who are 'they', it used to be people and processors doing it live, in reaction to current situations and threat assessments. There was very little backlog* and trace analysis.

Since 9/11 fallout they basically have alot more recorded and can go back as far as they need to to corroberate stuff*, thats the primary* difference. There is also more intelligence in cataloging and associating the data, and using more key words*.

If you want to be spooked, check out a movie called The Listening. But remember if its in a movie it's either total BS or has been declassified.

Who said listen.. I said record.

The reason we can't keep track of and find terrorists is we don't know WHO we are looking for.

If they know who to track they can track you. They have to want to track you though.

The tough part of finding terrorists is figuring out who you're looking for.

They have sophisticated computer programs to sift through conversations...

I am sorry but I will have to bath this month.

Does my towel make me look taller.

Check out the eyebrows on that chick

I think my camel is cheating on me

Does this explosive vest make me look fat

Your sister talked to a Christian where should I send the head

I want to sign up for flying lessons but want credit because I am skipping the landing course.

When you go back home Usamma asked if you could bring some Oreos

Osama:

- Does not live in the US
- Does not have a registered address in the US
- Does not havea SSN #, Credit card #, registered phone #, etc..
- Does not even use phones, radios, mail, etc.. anymore, he sends a courier with a verbal message.

Anyone who is still under the radar could be in the US going about their business just like the rest of us. That is why they've gone Orwell on us.

They don't know who the next terrorists are.. that's the whole point, their are thousands and thousands of Al Queda operatives who've never commited a crime or been linked to anything at all.. they won't have someone with a history who we know of attempt the next attack.

Once there is some reason to suspect someone then they can go back and retrieve that person's data and go through it again, to try and figure out how they are connected and who else they might be connected to.

Mustafa bin Muhammed Jihad might be in your neighborhood.. he went to an Al Queda training camp, but he's never done anything wrong, is living under a false identity, and we don't know who or what he is. But when he gets activated by a phone call from a suspicious # we'd already seen before hopefully the giant Dragnet the government has setup can help catch him in time.

ya know....I almost feel creeped out when I read shit like this. Years ago when I was still living in Quebec, I had friends who were from Morocco...they were all attending Sherbrooke University, and were very smart and educated guys coming from rich families in their home country. One of them was my boyfriend for a little while until I realized they considered north american women as "whores" because we sleep with guys before marriage, etc. and had many girlfriends at once (we eventually met each other and realized those creeps were hypocrits). Anyway, I have seen them kneeing in their living room sometimes, listening to that tape on the sound system, of a guy (priest or something), praying, with a lamenting voice, and the guys were praying with this voice, murmuring words in arabic language, rocking their bodies back and forth, and CRYING, listening to whatever that voice on the tape was saying....they were holding the Coran in their hands...and the whole thing just appeared WEIRD to me.....now looking back, I always wonder...if they were one of THEM. And it creeped the hell out of me to think that "maybe" I was dating one of those fanatic freaks.

I was about 18 years old. And who said I slept with the guy? I said "we" speaking of north american women as a general rule, most girls don't wait marriage anymore to have sex. By the way, nice shot calling me a dumb whore sitting in front of your screen, you'd say that to my face and you'd get fuckin slapped.
