Illegal immigrants have staged protests across the country -- demanding a quicker road to citizenship and appreciation for their critical role in the U.S. economy. Now there's word, that a select number of Massachusetts State Troopers will be given the power to arrest illegal immigrants.

What i want to know is, how come they weren't arrested IMMEDIATELY???? They are here ILLEGALLY!!!! I know I didn't go to college, so I may be missing something here but it does seem very black and white.

It was a matter of jurisdiction (sp?).

Previously, it was only a matter that the INS had control over, now some troopers are able to check on citizenship/residency status. It's a good thing I guess. I personally know that strange things can happen when the computers/files don't match up properly. I have been detained and almost extradited at Logan because of a 'mistake' or a 'computer error'.

Politicians are only worried about themselves

Modern polarized elections are won or lost by under 1%

Hispanics represent a few percentage points. If they can be wooed then the will secure the elections for decades.

The Dems are ahead in the Hispanic sucking and it is already bearing fruit (mostly avocado's)

Illegals can't vote, just keep that in mind. It's the way it should be. Who can vote is their legal families/friends/etc.

I truly wish the feds would go after the people who willingly hire illegals and enforce stiff penalties and that will help alleviate the problem ..
It's becoming a big problem down here , geting very hard to compete against the low bids , pretty much sucks

I don't understand why someone would be against this.

Can't be businesses lobbying for the cause, right? Cuz they can't be employing illegal immigrants.

The immigrants sure as hell aren't giving money to politicians.

I think normal citizens would be against having illegals in the country given our current world environment. So the vast majority of us won't be lobbying for them.

So where the heck is this coming from? What benefit would any politician have for siding with illegal immigrants at as time like this?

GW had them confused as he speaks pretty good Mexican so he got a pass. The demo's always play the us against them. The thems are all Euro-Americans...the majority.

They will win now because the Republicans got greedy and F*ck up. Now the united Minorities along with city dwellers, gheys, and Unions, non Euro-Americans are actually a majority.

Majority rules in the democratic process. Know that you are now the minority.

Hispanics are US citizens too, it isn't a "them" issue. Ghey's aren't "them". City dwellers aren't "them". Non-Euro-American's aren't "them". They are all part of "us".

Adapting to a changing population is only frowned upon to those who feel they are being left behind. Non-english speaking citizens, no matter where they are from, have the same rights and say you do to want a change of the Constitution to either include or exclude something. Right now the only leverage the right leaning part of government is able to use to it's advantage are "moral guidelines" based on religion. This won't last forever. Pretty soon we will be a country where the government isn't swayed at all by religious direction or influence. I will welcome it with open arms. We are smart enough to know what is right and wrong without having to look to a imaginary father figure for guidance in lawmaking. The minority of Anglo-americans will no longer have the final word due to influence since the majority will not be these people. I'm not worried since there will be nothing to complain about. If this country turns into an all hispanic speaking nation, I'll move or adapt myself. I won't like it, but if there are 10 people to my 1 that will, so be it.

Pushing the "good old days" isn't doing anyone any good. Yes, we know how it used to be. We also know how far we've come. To the average white male I can understand the feeling of being abandoned or that this country is going down the tubes. I don't agree, but I can see where it's coming from. I can also see that we will never have our perfect '50's picket fence 99% white 2.1 kids christian society again.

The question I thought to answer was why the hispanics legal citizens are on the side of illegal immigration.

Probably because the new arrivals are the easiest to exploit.

The politicians are afraid of the hispanic vote so they will do nothing to cease the flow.

I fear that democracy thrives in a fairly homogeneous population with similar attitudes and ethos.

Or, the government could stop making LEGAL immigrants jump through hoops and endlessly-changing red tape in order to simply renew an expiring h1 visa.

One story, two sides. I have seen both sides Chris, have you?

Here's a brief rundown of how I (and every other H1/B immigrant) had to renew my visa every 3 years.

1. Fill out renewal form and submit to INS with certified copies of tons of documents (birth certificate, passport, previous applications, previous passports, parents birth certificates, letters from employers, Criminal records, tax returns, bank statements, marriage certificate, driver's license, photographs (not digital) a certain size and shape, with the right lighting and background, with your head taking up between 65% and 75% of the photo etc etc etc) and several hundred dollars.

2. Wait months and months with no chance of an update from INS if you call them.

3. Wait a few more months

4. Wait longer

5. Wait some more.

6. Receive notification that your application has been received and to check results at your country of origin american consulate.

7. Fly to Ireland.

8. Go to American Consulate in Dublin on a Thursday between 9am and 11am and line up to arrange an appointment.

9. Spend time and money in Dublin waiting for appointment time to arrive.

10. Go to Allied Irish bank and obtain a money order, in US dollars for exactly $13.75.

11. Go to local pharmacy that knows how to take EXACTLY the right photographs for your new visa stamp. Get raped on price of photographs.

12. Take photos and money order to Consulate and hand over copies of ALL your immigration documents EVER, along with ANOTHER application for immigration extension.

13. Go back to Consulate at 14:30 on day of appointment and sit in room waiting for your name to be called.

14a. Go into interview room to find out why you were denied.
14b. Pick up passport with new INS H1/B stamp.

15. Fly home to USA and look forward to doing the whole thing again in 3 years.
