In God We Trust

The new dollar coin will be the first to not have

IN GOD WE TRUST

See now the SP's have made the world a better place. Free from that pesky Judeo-Christian ethics that get in the way of so many fun things.

Don't forget to tell your children all behaviors are now just peachy.

I'm glad that off our coins. You have no idea how many times I have cut myself on those words. Our coins are now safer for children to play with.

The history of this is actually pretty interesting. The motto was first placed on coins during the Civil War, because at the time the religious folks argued that we had that war because of separation of church and state -- which they wanted to end. I believe putting that motto on coins was a sort of compromise to appease these people.

The motto was added to paper money in the 1950's, when lots of folks were working hard to distinguish ourselves from the godless commies. This was at around the same time that we added the words "under god" to the pledge of allegiance, and people were mounting the ten commandments in front of courthouses (paid for by a Hollywood studio to promote the Charleton Heston movie).

Mmmmmm, religion. YUMMY.

I can't see any harm from us being a country based on a religion. Those types of countries NEVER prove to be harmful......

I'm almost certain those words were on paper money well before the 1950's. In fact, collectors like 'athiest' bills from the depression era 'cuz they DIDN'T have those words on 'em for some years. Going by memory, in the late 30's they removed that for a coupla years. But I'm almost positive it was on there before that...

Maybe, my info comes from a radio interview I heard a while back (guy who wrote a book on the history of religion in the US government). Of course like everything else there's a wikipedia article on the topic.
