My sister's friend works for a law firm in Minneapolis that overlooks where the bridge collapsed. Here's a pic she got

At a zoning board meeting earlier tonite, a NHDOT employee's comment was "drive fast and don't look back"

we have a balancing act between over engineering and buget, even with "over engineering at any cost" philosophy, sometimes nature is contrary to all theories, water ice floats, shit happens

How long till we see the Big Dig fail like this.

Any takers on a friendly wadger?

I would have put Dick Cheney on that list as well, but hey you wrote it.

How about we spend our $$ on Iraq so we can blow it up.
We got some bright boys running the good old USA.
More people get killed on the roads 40K a year.
And they spend spend spend to stop terrorism, something they can't stop.
Verry sad .

You can add, genetics to the list or the fact that someone was abused at a young age.

I heard on the radio this am that the bridge from Portsmouth to Kittery, is #1 one the federal "Red List" of bridges that need to be repaired.

I have a new engineering based crack pot theory....

what if due to the construction bumper to bumper on side of the bridge all stomped their brakes. The otherside could add to it if they were accelerating simultaneously. This would put a feirce horizontal load on a structure designed for weight loading

green house gases
endangered species
Greenland Ice thickness

Seems like it might work trick is to have a everyone in the same car to provide the same load and acceleration force to the bridge and the same time.

HMMMMMMMM

It's not as far fetched as you might think

2000 years ago, the Romans discovered that the cadence of soldiers marching would setup a resonance within bridge structures and cause them to crumble, they solved the problem with an offbeat marching cadence

While at UNH i was told by an engineering prof that the reason there is no passing on the Dover Point Bridge on RT4/16 is that it was not engineered correctly to withstand the fast currents of the river below and the unlikely but possible event of many cars changing lanes at the same time in the same direction as the current.

BS? Anyone?

Resonance and harmonic frequencies are definitely real bridge concerns.

Google the Tacoma narrows bridge.. a famous collapse due to lift from wind + harmonic frequencies.

The Tacoma bridge seems to be burned into the eyes of many engineering students their first semester... heck I think they showed it to us at student orientation.

ISTR when I visited the Air Force Academy when looking at schools they also had a really cool demo they showed us where they destroyed model airplanes in a wind tunnel with the effects.

Why has no one blamed Evolution? Last Sunday the preachers on TV were saying Nazism and Communism were caused by the theory of Evolution, surely bridge collapses are too. Stem cells or abortion might be good things to blame for this too.
