Pilot grounded for stunt

If you guys saw opening day at Fenway this year then you saw an awesome fly over with a nice little trick. Too bad the pilot got grounded for retraining for this one.

Those are my boys!!

Dude was late and had too much speed. The manuever he did was to try and scrub off speed to join the formation. Looked cool.

he must have blacked out from the Gs because even after losing the speed he couldn't hold formation.

silent drill team is absolutely stunning. probably more jaw-dropping than watching the blue angels. I got to see them perform at their sunset parade in DC in front of the Iwo Jima Memorial...

and while we're on the topic...

Good call Doc. IMO the flight leader should have told the 4th jet to follow in trail of the formation instead of pushing it to catch up and join the formation... good initiative, bad judgment maybe? definitely looked cool though. I heard rumors that this may have actually been planned. Some lady on the news who works at a cafe near Fenway said the practice run before the real thing that same day, he did the same maneuver... but we all know how reliable 7 News is...

The problem wasn't the maneuver. That is a perfectly "normal" way to reduce speed. The problem is that the FAA (or whoever regulates that junk) doesn't allow for it at lower than 5000 ft. They were flying at 1200. Given that, if they did rehearse it, they broke the law more than once.

Re: Pilot grounded for stunt

pffft, military pilots are like sport bike riders. they know it's illegal but hey, sometimes you realize you are in a fighter jet after all, and it can do some pretty cool stuff. if i had a dollar for everytime i saw one of our pilots grounded for doing something "dangerous" i'd have been a rich man. even our XO got grounded for buzzing the tower in afghanistan.

we flew at an air show in ohio once. our pilot showed up to fly that morning still half wasted from the night before. he completely made up his own flight plan. did nothing he was supposed to do. except his high speed pass.... in the wrong direction, hovered around in circles looking lost. it was hilarouse. the FAA was not happy.

hahahaha, I love it... only a matter of time before I'm that guy hovering around at air shows lost and still half cocked

as for the maneuver, I know it's a perfectly legit maneuver, but as you said, only above 5,000 ft.

I'm going to venture a guess that the 4 pilots were sitting at the bar the night before nursing a couple beers when one of them said to the black sheep of the flight, "hey, I bet you won't roll around the formation tomorrow... c'mon, you know those Boston fans would love it... you won't..." And that's when the blacksheep replies, "fuck you asshole, I'll do it, I'll do it twice!" Hence, we now have a story to talk about.

Re: Pilot grounded for stunt

lesson number one. all fighter pilots think they are maverick, and it's 1985. some how mirrored glasses big cigars and silly nick names are all cool.

I am watching Top Gun right now. Goose just died

Sure it was planned. Fucking Boston fans are like god damn religious zealots. Being the guy to pull the badass move over Fenway on OPENING DAY is life-long experience and will go down in his family HISTORY.

So he'll get a lil heat from the Brass? Big deal. This country was founded by FUCKING BADASSES. PROPS MY MAN PROPS>
