Re: Rumor from a somewhat reliable source

not gonna happen. the infastructure that would have to be in place to make this happen would take years to implement and it is not something they can do behind our backs as too many private citizens would have to be involved. there is no way to track or police this. it would have to be voluntary like the 70's or nothing at all... not happening

Re: Rumor from a somewhat reliable source

If you call corruption capable

Yes they can do it, and i guarantee it will benefit someone's pocket before it benefits the american people.

The people will dictate the fuel consumption. As people give up their 8 cylinders for 4, carpool, stop leisurely driving, by the time your little rumor is to go into affect the people will have already taken their steps to help cut the cost.

With less of a demand the price will go down. by us not trying to fill our oil reserves anymore the cost will go down.

There not only no need for gov't fuel rationing, but it WILL NOT work.

Mmmm, numbers.

Just remember about the Prius Rich, 8000 with 3 -> ~4.8
that is nearly 56% of 7/9

Actually, it's 115k. Given a 46mpg EPA combined rating for the prius and a 30mpg rating for the civic along with an 8000 upcharge:

(6 / 46)x + 8000 = (6/30)x

.0695x = 8000

x = 115107 miles to breakeven.

That may still be unacceptable to the average driver especially given the battery replacement cost/time, but new technologies are always fueled by the early adopters who subsidize the NRE in exchange for the "cool" factor they get by being the first on the block.

Eventually hybrids may make sense on their economy alone but for that to happen you have to get some people to buy in for other reasons to drive the technology.

Re: Rumor from a somewhat reliable source

Most Prius drivers see about 40 and most little cars give better then 30 about 32

Yes there was some hyperbole and we still haven't seen the $6 gas

Toyota is gouging as it used to be a 4000 up charge when gas was 2.80

were going backward, 40 years ago

my first car, a 1962 VW Beetle got 30-35mpg and cost $1400
gas cost 27¢

EPA and the DOT

Cars are safer and cleaner

They also cost twice as much in real dollars

my 62 sport fury routinely got 22 on the highway at 85
361 4bbl

Re: Rumor from a somewhat reliable source

My mothers old Datsun B210 regularly got 40+ mpg, not bad for 26 years ago! I agree with RandyO on this one, how can we not have 50+ mpg cars today after 25+ years of development.

Simple, no demand - no development - no production. To me gas $$$ going up is a good thing in some ways. Environmental, Political possibly Good. Economical, social potentially Bad.

Re: Rumor from a somewhat reliable source

1 gallon (US) = 3.785412 liters
1 Euro = 1.5667 dollars

so... 1.469 x 3.785412 x 1.5667 = $8.71 / gallon for regular.

Re: Rumor from a somewhat reliable source

We aren't running out oil, at least not in the next 6 months. Maybe in 10-20 years. I do think cheap oil, is a thing of the past, although I feel its pricing is being pushed up more by investors and the weak dollar. I'm sure this will correct itself just as the housing market has, its just another cycle.

scare mongering, in the 60s whin I was in school they rod us that there would be no more oil in 25 years,

but there are more known oil reserves now than there were then

truth is, oil is a renewable resource, organics, mostly plankton and other marine organics is what becomes oil, not dinosaurs, dead organics are continuously settling to the bottom of the ocean and being compressed into oil
