i went to south shore motorsports...

hey all. i posted in the general forum about needing new tires. i didnt want the hassle of ordering online and then driving the tires over to a shop. so i'm just sharing my positive experience.

i went to south shore motorsports in quincy, mass. spoke with a sales rep by the name of Jenn. She was pretty cool, but at times she didnt seem like she knew what she was talking about. anywho, i ended up getting dunlops because they're the only things that fit my 89 fzr600. (110/70/17 & 140/60/18) she gave me a pretty good deal on them too (20% off + tax free!)

i spoke with Ron (or was it Rob??) in the service dept about installation. He quoted me "$35/wheel off the bike. $65 on the bike. BUT it's like $40/off bike and $70 on bike if you didnt buy from them. "

well, that is much better than the "$150 to mount and balance on the bike if you bought them from us." And they weren't going to give me any discounts either! Oh yea, us being Cycles 128 in Beverly."

1st off--go with a 120/70-17 front tire (most common tire out there)
2nd- lose that 18" rear - a honda f2 17" wheel will bolt on- just use the fzr r/wheel bearing in both sides of the f2 wheel-then ya can run a 160/60-17 rear tire(very common size)

just an idea for next time

As long as you're happy, that's all that counts I guess

However, my thoughts are you paid to much for mounting and balancing seeing you bought the tires from them. From what I've seen and heard, most places will mount them for free if you buy them there and charge somewhere around $10 a rim to balance them
Razee's in North Kingstown charges me $18 a rim mounted and balanced with me buying the tires online and bringing the rims to them, it's $35 per rim if they have to take them off the bike
I know the guys pretty good that work there but it's the same for everyone. I asked about the costs and buying tires online and they had a simple and honest reply to me "we appreciate ALL business and tire change prices are based on the book time and not where you got them"

thanks for the input guys. i searched all over this forum and sportiders.com and couldnt find any solid info on tire changing. everyone seemed to go to jim pidgeon in manchester and that's a hike for me. i guess i'll just learn from my mistakes... and hope others would do so too!

hardcore:
wouldn't a 120 be too wide for my front end, since the staggered offset (f-120 & r-140) would almost be the same width? just a newbie thought .

a 120 front is fine! you can also go with a 160 rear if available.
