They are definitely good cars, and quite a bit more reliable than Audis. I was kind of disappointed that I bought the '03 Legacy (in late '02) only to see that a new Legacy was coming out in '04. Oh well.

Another bummer about the F-XT is that it suffers poor fuel economy (well, it does have a 4.44 final drive ratio) and uses premium fuel.

I plan on going for 200k on our Legacy too. Let's cross our fingers.

I can attest to the fact that VWs have horrible electrical problems. I've owned 3 VWs and had quite a few problems in multiple areas actually.

The comment about the headlights is funny because my friend has a '98 New Beetle (not sure what he was thinking) and it always has one light out. He's taken it to a total of 3 different dealerships (each one multiple times) and no one has been able to fix the problem. I've also noticed that many of the New Beetles I've seen are similarly afflicted.

UPDATE: Just got a service bulletin from Soob North America about the head gasket problems they're NOT having. Says they're gonna cover 'em for the original owner up to 8 years or 100,000 miles. The notice also included information about how to get a rebate if you've already paid for the repairs for this 'very isolated problem'...

Soob suggests getting it down to the local service shop for some 'magic potion', or 'additive' as they call it. They claim this 'additive' will help deter this phenom that only happens to a 'select few models'...

Funny stuff them Soob suits come up with. See ya in a coupla days, Sal...

Still waiting for the bulletin about front dif's/automatic tranny problems they're NOT having. More specifically, the tranny pumps...

Passat Wagon - NOT!

Guy here just bought a Passat Wagon. I thought he would have learned his lesson the first time with his Audi.

Took delivery yesterday. He has a list 2 pages long of things wrong.

Such as headlights don't work
Brake lights don't work
Remote door doesn't work
Fit and trim pieces loose
Uneven idle
Interior light stays on when doors are closed
Won't come on when doors are open
Radio doesn't work for shit.

Oh yeah and windshield wipers on work high and washer not at all.

Took it back today to ask for his money back!

Fog light

Volvos' Audi and some other Euro cars, have those ONE bright tail lights as high intensity visual aids so someone doesn't whack ya from behind when driving in poor visibility.

Its a switch on the dash, meant to be like that.

Interestingly, newer VW golf's headlights come on when the E-brake is used. Now this is when the car is on and running not parked and shut off.

Hey the old legacy went pretty well....

Two of us tracked a '90 or so Legacy turbo.

Pretty well balanced. Okay to flog around.

I've got a '94 Ford Explorer w/ about 165k miles on it. Nothing major at all til these past few years. Needed radiator, fan about 2 years ago. Just recently, front end rebuilt (ball joints, swing arm bushings, u-joints - $1200) and transmission rebuilt ($2200). All things considered, this truck doesn't owe me a thing, IMHO. I'd buy another Ford!

My company vehicle (I'm an electrician) is a Ford van E-250. At 145k ( that's 145k HARD MILES) it's starting to get some problems. It's had a complete new exhaust, needs a radiator and steering pump. Anything else has been regular wear and tear. Again, I don't see a problem with Ford, not that there aren't any, just my experience.

My father has had two of them since that and besides regular maintenace hasn't had a single problem. He put about 180k on his first one and I think he has about 130k+ on the one he has now.
I'd be willing to be none of them were 2000's or newer...

I used to think that subes were ok, I owned one once, similar to a beetle, easy to replace the motor... it was just a piece of shit that wouldn't die. and when it did, a $25 motor made it last another year.

but now I own an old bimmer and I know better.

I have owned two Soobies a 2000 2.5rs and an 03 WRX and both have been great cars. My brother owns the rs now and its still running great. I have to admit I beat the living hell out of these cars and they keep coming back for more. Dirt roads ad 30-80mph, autocross, awd donuts in the snow and just everyday hard driving and my only complaint is the cheap paint.

this makes me wonder.

i have a 2002 Outback wagon, thats about to end its lease (in Jan). Its got 50,000 miles and so far the short block had to be replaced, the front brakes gave out, my radio/CD player works half the time, some bulbs gave out, and now the tranny isnt going in every gear every time and the clutch is burning up.

Good thing I've got an '03

I don't know. I think there are always a few bad examples of every brand of car. According to Consumer Reports (whom I'd not listen to regarding testing cars, but they do track reliability concerns very well) the Legacy/OB is an above average car as far as reliability goes....going way back.

Come on Jay. Is it still acting up? Do you still hate it? How's the hatch handle? I bought a legacy wagon a little while ago it's older (95) with the good motor(2.2), but it has high miles! (180k) It runs perfect! Maybe you need an '05 GT sedan. They're awesome!

Honestly, since it's 65,000 mile self destruct, it's been a decent little carrier. We're nearing 90K now and I can see some minor, small ticket stuff getting ready to give...

We've decided to run it for another year too. There's a coupla new models out now that we like. But we'd like to give 'em a year or two to work out kinks before we jump into a new cage on a new platform...

If Soob comes out with a 100,000 mile warranty and puts MUCH larger brakes on that new B6 (?) by the time we're ready, we MAY take a closer look at that...

So overall, it hasn't been THAT bad. I STILL don't think I shoulda had the failures I had when I had 'em. And they hafta figure out what that funky 'Subaru smell' is and how to fix it...
