Good cheap dirt helmet for street use?

Hi,

Now that the weather has gotten warmer I'm thinking about being hot instead of cold. The idea of a dirt helmet with a chin bar appeals to me for commuting. I'd wear appropriate glasses but it would flow more air than any vent. I'm looking for something that has a good value. The furthest under $150 is best. If there's a good $80 helmet I'd buy it. DOT is fine by be for this use.

Thanks

A

Aren't street helmets better for street use? I thought they were better protection, that's why they were different (that and you don't need to block tree limbs in the street). I could be wrong....?

Yes, street helmets prolly offer more protection, I'm just thinking of the dirt helmet as an open face helmet with a chin bar. I suppose I could just take the face shield off a road helmet.

This is just for commuter use. 90% of the use is about 30 MPH.

Sometimes I wonder about being overheated verses protection. At some point there's a trade off, just trying to stay cool

Most street helmets these days have visors with this mechanism that allows them to "flip" up and allow air to flow in where that clear piece of plastic used to reside...

Yeah, true about the visor. There's just something about having the plastic up their though that I am not to crazy about. I wouldn't put a sail on my helment either. The opening eye seems smaller too. There's just something about the chin bar on motocross helmets, like it's further away, they just seem more airy, lighter.

OK, thanks anyhow.

Alright on a serious note, my brother has this...

Lighter, more airflow than most conventional street helmets, but it is louder than most street helmets also. And it is well out of the range of what you're looking to spend.

I just bought one of these:
Bell Bicycle Bellistic Helmets
I had seen some guys wearing them at summer Off Road events. I love it. A lot of motorcycle helmets have elaborate venting systems that do not work, IMO. This helmet flows air! It does not have a DOT sticker, but it has a Snell rating. The helmet looks so slick that I doubt that I will ever be called on it. I purchased mine on E-Bay for $20. Just search "Downhill Helmet"

A dirt helmet flows A LOT of air. No problem in town, but on the open road it can get to be annyoing. Especially if you're prone to dry eyes. Even with full mx goggles on, the airflow can be overwhelming. I don't care for HJC street lids, but I like their dirty ones. Not their cheaps units though, as they tend to weigh quite a bit.

I have had many off road helmets and there is plenty of air in your face but none of them flowed any air across *my head*. This one does, and it is very light. I could concievably get a stick in the brain, though.

Now, *that's* the response I was waiting for! LOL! I know how you feel, "$20 lid for a $20 head" and all that. At age 47, I just don't ride as hard as I used to. And I am taking a chance....but when you're hot, you're HOT! And when you're not, well, I'll just wear one of my other lids.
I 'aint that smart anyway.
I still am pretty capable in the dirt (just ask Tony!) but I rarely push to the point of falling anymore. I also bought a Beta Rev3 recently so I wanting something for putzing around on that, which, BTW, is a total RIOT.
