    New from Burlington

    Hey everybody,

I'm new to the forums and motorcycling, but I just wanted to say what's up. I'm soon to be 20 years old (in a week!), and I'll be getting my learners permit over spring break (also in a week). I go to school at UVM, and am a biochem major (so so fun) Anyways, I'll hopefully be buying a bike this summer, so maybe I will see some of you around!

Sup P, welcome to the place.

Whatever you do, don't buy a bike from Doc.

What are you looking at for your first one?

    Re: New from Burlington

When I was 19 and at St. Mike's I bought a 1982 Honda CM400 while living on campus that summer.

It needed some carb work so I would play with the carbs and then run it down Route 15 to test it out. One of these days it was really hot and I decided that putting my helmet on was too much work.

I wrung it out and then got on the shoe-horn by the entrance to St. Mike's while a Colchester cop was going the other way. He noticed my un-helmeted head and the rest was history.

I guess what I'm saying is... don't do anything stupid.

And sign up for the MSF class as soon as possible.

    Re: New from Burlington

    Thanks for the welcome everybody!

I am not really sure what I am looking for as a first bike.... I talked to Doc a bit earlier on the hawkGT forum, but those are looking quite expensive, and I don't want a bike thats gonna turn me into a grease stain on the road if I crash it! I am currently looking into cheaper alternatives, and have found a surplus of older honda's (70's 350s/450s/550s) and older suzukis in the Philly area where my parents live. I am really looking into the mechanics part of motorcycling right now as I have always wanted to learn to work on car engines, but that stuff is WAY too expensive! I figure if I can get an older honda, that maybe turns but doesn't necessarily run, that would be like 300-400 considering what I'm seeing on a regular basis on craigslist. From there I would like to just disassemble the motor and see what makes it tick. I have a decent amount of mechanical know how, and almost everyone I have talked to said that working on their bikes makes it more fun to ride them. Anyway, I bought "essential motorcycle maintenance" this afternoon and I'm about halfway through it. It has really good (but maybe a bit too simple) explanations of all the different systems on the bike.

well, back to studying for my test

KillBill you wanted to see my whip, here it is!

I built her up from parts that I ordered at the beginning of last summer, but the wheelset was backordered for almost 2 months, so I only got to rider her for about 3 weeks at the end of the summer....

    Welcome d00d!

tip: spend a couple minutes studying for learner's permit, it's not a gimmie test.

Not for a squid! I took the test last summer, along with a couple guys on their 2nd try.

    Here's a sample...
Q: You are riding with a group in a staggered formation. If you are the 3rd rider from the front, how many seconds should you be behind the group leader?
