OK after skimming the endless pages int his thread, I am finally ready to post something meaningful and worthwhile, even though I have "grl" in my title, thus must be an attention whore.
Welcome to the forum Want2B!!!!
I started ona ninja 250 4 years ago and quickly upgraded to my Sv650S (which I still have). After more than 20,000 miles of seat time, I made the right choice for me the second time around (i.e. the 250 was not a good fit). The best bike for you is the one you will learn safely on, fit comfortably on, and be happy with, because most importantly, riding should be FUN and make you HAPPY!
If you take the class and find that you are too nervous, stressed, worried, etc, then maybe this isn't the right time for you to get your own bike. Get more passenger time in and if it is still something that interests you, go back to it. Nothing says you have to make up your mind permanently EVER.
If you take the class and fall in love with it (which I feel is more likely given my own experience), then go to bike nights, bike shops, bike shows, etc....anywhere that has bikes you can sit on (and once you have your license ask for a test ride, or bring a friend who can test ride for you) and find the right bike for you. Maybe that's a dirtbike (I didn't start in the dirt and I know many who didn't and do fine), maybe it's a Ninja 250, maybe a used CBR600....there are bikes that are better for starting on than others, and some that are worse, and we will be around to help you through that process when you are ready.
As for the attention, as long as you are riding to ride, then you won't even notice half of the attention you get. When I am properly geared for a street ride, for instance, you can barely tell that I am female, let alone what I look like, but take with you the smug satisfaction of knowing that you are doing something you love for the enjoyment it gives you, not for the jealousy or attraction from others.
Hope that helps, and I hope you stick around.
