    Greetings from Belchertown, MA!

    Hi everyone,

I am a UMass Amherst student and I just upgraded my bike this summer from a 150cc to a 700cc (1986 Yamaha FZX700S, see pictures below). I'm sad I didn't find you guys till so late in the season.

She's a great bike, kept up with my friends '99 CBR600 bored out to 750 the other day. Also got her up to 125 before the wind got the best of me on RT166 today, she still had some throttle left and didn't even kick on her other two carbs.

I plan on repainting her this winter, as the plastic has faded a lot.

I am glad you asked, the '86 and '87 fzx700s is 4 cylinder with 4 carburetors. The two on the outside edge of the block, (#1 and #4) which the bike runs on normally, these two supply fuel to the entire engine normally. Then there are the two carburetors in between the regular carbs (#2 and #3). These are different model carbs and allow a bit more fuel to run through than #1 and #4 alone. When the bike hits about 7500 rpm it switches on #2 and #3 while keeping #1 and #2 on as well. This adds a hell of a lot of boost and when combined with the light weight of the bike (for its time) she can keep up with a lot of modern street bikes in acceleration (probably not super stocked bikes, but I haven't really tried yet). Like I said, I was able to keep up with my friend on his '99 CBR with mostly race stock.

The previous owner said he hit 90mph in 2ed gear, which doesn't sound like it would be too good for the bike.

And yes, I am aware that the mirrors are wicked ugly, I am working on replacing them, they are as tight as I can get them without putting in washers but the right one tilts way up when hit high speeds, and thats the one I need when I go that fast

The Fazer/Radian's were great bikes in their day... congrats.

So...have you practiced emergency stopping from 120mph yet?

Hahaha, well kinda, almost passed my exit the other day doing 125. I took it out on my first group ride with 3 other people (all with newer bikes: my friend ('99 CBR), Deslock, and GNTurbo6). Was great fun. after my friend and I went around town, popped my first wheelie, great fun, didn't even have to crank the throttle all that far. Also found out exactly how much the bike will fish-tail on a road with a little bit of gravel, hahaha. Good times!

Yep, youngster. Obsessed with how fast he's going.

What do you wear for gear?

Sadly I don't wear much. I have a non-padded leather jacket and some regular leather gloves. I wish I could afford better gear and I almost spent some of my money for books on a better jacket. But alas, I am but a poor college kid...

Yeah, I do like to go fast around turns, but I also just love cruising around, as long as I am not stuck behind a slow car.

All that money on college.....do you at least protect your head? Check out the for sale/wanted section on the forum, many people discard their old gear for new stuff - you may be able to snag a deal from another member. What size do you need, we can keep our eyes open for you.

Oh yeah, and welcome to the forum.

Actually, you can find some decent gear for short money. There are quite a few online stores that sell great leftover gear.

Check out this thread for a huge list of stores:

Nah man, I respect the road, and she's been good to me. I ride as safe as I can most of the time, but I do also enjoy taking fast curves. I've been on 2 wheels for longer than I've been on 4.

And yes, of course I have a helmet. HJC sessions, a little loud but it keeps my brains off the road.

Welcome, nice bike. You don't see too many oldies running around anymore.

I have a strong hatred for HJC. Sorry but I would never wear a $100 helmet. I'd rather buy a $500 one and have no other gear.
